BWW Review: Portland Stage's DANCING AT LUGHNASA Plumbs Realm of Memory

Portland Stage opened its 2015-2016 season with a thought-provoking production of Irish playwright Brian Friel's award-winning drama Dancing at Lughnasa, a wistful memory play about a matriarchal family in County Donegal in 1936. Commonly considered Friel's masterpiece, the drama examines the narrow, restricted lives of the Mundy sisters, constrained by poverty, unfulfilled dreams, and the conventions of Catholicism, as recounted by Michael, the 'love child' of one of the sisters, Christina, who tells the story from the dual perspective of a seven-year-old child and a grown man three decades later.

We remember Brian Friel

The Roundabout family mourns the loss of Brian Friel. This gifted playwright gave so many beautiful stories to the world, and we will treasure those that we were able to bring to life with him. Brian always wrote with great depth, whether through his unmatched sense of language, surprising humor, righteous anger, or incredible heart. His commitment to bringing stories of his Irish homeland, often through the town of Ballybeg that he created and populated with so many memorable tales and characters, was admirable.

BWW Review: Yellow Tree Theatre's Production of the Irish Classic DANCING AT LUGHNASA Will Leave You With A Warm and Wistful Feeling

Irish playwright Brian Friel's DANCING AT LUGHNASA is a perfectly lovely play, and a wonderful choice for the perfectly lovely Yellow Tree Theatre. The eight-person cast is actually on the large side for their cozy and intimate space nestled inside an Osseo strip mall, but the warm, humorous, and melancholic tone is a perfect fit. It's a beautiful play and a beautiful cast, and will leave you with a warm and wistful feeling.
