Ken Davenport has been chosen to receive the Musical Theatre Society's 2010 annual Leonidas A. Nickole Award of Distinction. Davenport will accept the award prior to Emerson Stage's performance of Into The Woods on Friday, April 23 in the Cutler Majestic Theatre.

Broadway ledgends Chita Rivera and Rita Moreno will be appearing at the Tilles Center for seperate but consective engagements in the upcoming weeks. Moreno will grace the Tilles stage on April 24, while Rivera will present her 'Chita Rivera: My Broadway' show on May 1.

Their new show, 'From Pelham to Park Avenue,' features songs from Broadway by Stephen Sondheim ('Pretty Women'), Jule Styne ('Make Someone Happy') and Frank Loesser ('I Believe In You'), Italian classics ('Funniculi, Funnicula') and numbers from newer songwriters like Michael Feinstein ('Swing Is Back In Style'). The engagement - which is directed by Richard Jay-Alexander and features Music Director Ben Toth on piano and Jered Egan on bass - opened at Feinstein's last night, April 20.

Color me ignorant of musical theatre, but is there any other way to direct 'Into the Woods' without it looking like that Great Performances production we all saw on PBS back in the early 1990s? I found the whole thing incredibly predicable as well as a little under lit. If Sondheim deconstructs the Brothers Grimm in 'Into the Woods', I think he would probably be ready for someone to deconstruct him now.

The Huntington Theatre Company concludes its 28th season - a season of American stories - with the award-winning playwright Craig Lucas' modern classic Prelude to a Kiss. Jr. and starring original cast members Sally Mayes and Lynne Wintersteller along with Broadway alums George Dvorksy and Sal Vivinio from April 16-25 (Wednesday and Thursday at 2PM; Friday and Saturday at 8pm; Saturday at 2pm; and Sunday at 3pm) in the Claire Shulman Playhouse Main Stage Theatre at Queens Theatre in the Park, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Flushing, NY.

The presentation followed a dinner and tribute performance to Ms. Lansbury by Broadway stars Victor Garber, Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley, and Washington favorite Sherri L. Edelen, staged by Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer, co-founder of Signature Theatre. Signature, the 2009 recipient of the Tony Award® for Regional Theatre, is internationally renowned for its productions of Sondheim works.

Angela Lansbury, the great star of stage, film, and television, was honored April 12 with the first annual Stephen Sondheim Award, given by Virginia's Signature Theatre at a black-tie Gala Benefit at the Embassy of Italy. The Sondheim Award, established by Signature last year in the name of America's most influential contemporary musical theater writer and composer, was presented to the actress by Mr. Sondheim himself.
