The unquestioned immortality of Mamma Mia! took a hit last year when its Broadway run came to an end after playing fourteen years, two theatres and 5,773 performances. Now comes the question of its unavoidability. Somehow, I've managed to - okay, maybe not avoid it, which implies snobbishness on my part - but Mamma Mia! has just never been on my radar. It'll be around forever - or at least as long as Boomer nostalgia sells - so that leaves plenty of time to catch up on other things, my thought process went. But now begins what will presumably turn into a licensing blitz, and Aurora's Paramount Theatre leads the bell-bottomed charge into Chicagoland. So here we go again for the first time, I guess.

MAMMA MIA! is one of the most successful musicals of all time, the eighth longest running show in Broadway history and one of only five musicals to have run for more than ten years on Broadway. The West End production is now in its eighteenth year. To date, MAMMA MIA! has been seen by over 60 million people worldwide in 50 productions in 16 different languages. MAMMA MIA! will embark on a farewell tour in the 2016-17 season, which also marks its fifteenth year on the road. Leading the cast of 30 is Sarah Wyatt as 'Donna Sheridan,' the independent single mother whose carefree past catches up with her on the eve of her daughter's wedding. Bride-to-be 'Sophie Sheridan' is played by Lizzie Markson; her fiance 'Sky' is played by Dustin Harris Smith. Sarah Smith and Betsy Padamonsky play Donna's best friends and former back-up band, 'Rosie' and 'Tanya,' (respectively) who reunite with their best friend on the island for Sophie's wedding. The three men from Donna's past and Sophie's possible dads are Shai Yammanee ('Sam Carmichael'), Marc Cornes ('Bill Austin'), and Andrew Tebo ('Harry Bright'). Sophie's & Sky's best friends are played by Chloe Kounadis ('Ali'), Niki Badua ('Lisa'), Austin Michael ('Pepper') and Max Ehrlich ('Eddie'). 'It's nearly time for the big election in November, but we wanted to put together a party people could really get behind!' explains producer Amy Francis Schott.

Custom Made Theatre Company opens its 18th season in San Francisco with Chess, the legendary rock opera from Tim Rice ("Evita","Jesus Christ Superstar") and Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, members of the celebrated pop group, ABBA. Set towards the end of the cold war, Chess uses politics and sport as metaphor for a love triangle between an enfant-terrible American superstar (loosely modeled on Bobby Fisher), his Hungarian-born lover/second, and a Soviet player looking to start a new life.
