AAFCA and LA City Hall Honor Unsolved At Inaugural AAFCA Day at City Hall April 27

In its ongoing efforts to recognize, support and raise awareness about the huge impact of cinema beyond the screen, the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) has partnered with Los Angeles City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson to present the inaugural AAFCA Day at City Hall on April 27 celebrating and honoring productions that put a spotlight on Los Angeles life highlighting its residents and locations through complex and elevated depictions. With that mission at the forefront, the inaugural AAFCA Day at City Hall will celebrate “Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.,” the groundbreaking USA limited series exploring the decade-plus investigation into the real-life homicides of the iconic rappers, as its first honoree. The “Unsolved” collaborators and key cast will gather before a fully assembled City Council on April 27 for a formal proclamation and reception as they are saluted as the very first honorees of AAFCA Day at City Hall. Harris-Dawson and AAFCA co-founder and president Gil Robertson, who jointly spearheaded this effort, will be on hand, along with other special guests.

Podcast: On 'Keith Price's Curtain Call,' Actress and Singer Sayonne about the Road to Stardom

I am so fortunate that I live, work, and cover theater in a town like New York. It never fails to surprise me at how much talent is brimming over in New York. When I meet young actresses like Stephanie Courtney aka Sayonne, I am very excited to talk to them, because they are really embarking on a wonderful journey, especially when they are as grounded as this young diva to be. Many times, I feel like the proud and fun fairy godfather to so many of these performers.

It's a Honolulu Who-dun-it With SHEAR MADNESS at MVT

Manoa Valley Theatre is proud to present a hilarious who-dun-it comedy that has been running continuously for the past 37 years in the United States live on stage from May 3 - 20. When the landlady who lives above a unisex hair salon is murdered, the audience gets involved in solving the crime by openly questioning the strange array of characters and attempting to solve the crime. All are suspect: the flamboyant hairdresser, the flirty yet ditzy assistant, the prim and proper uptight matron, and an older fellow who is a "used antique dealer." Much of the humor revolves around topical references to current events. It keeps every audience laughing as they try to outwit the suspects and catch the killer. New clues and up to the minute improvisation deliver a different show every night. Shear Madness is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the longest running play in the history of the USA and has enjoyed productions staged all over the world.

BWW Review: CRY-BABY at The Noel S. Ruiz Theatre

In a Grease-meets-Romeo & Juliet type of tale, the Tony nominated musical Cry-Baby brings loads of laughs. The Long Island premiere - running through May 12th at The Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center (CMPAC) - is superbly directed by Patrick Grossman - the Artistic Director of the Oakdale venue - and boasts an extraordinary cast. I've long admired the top notch comedic talent we have here on Long Island and the artists in this production certainly deliver sidesplitting performances.

Podcast: On 'Keith Price's Curtain Call,' Philip Dawkins Talks his Play THE GENTLEMAN CALLER Running Simultaneously in New York and Chicago

Any actor worth their salt will tell you that every great play begins with the words on the page.  Because of the worlds that playwrights (and Librettists) create, many people, even more than actors,  have jobs inside and outside of the theater.  So any chance to talk to a young playwright as delightful and talented as Chicago-based playwright, Philip Dawkins, I will take.  His current opus, The Gentleman Caller is currently in rehearsals to make its New York debut at Cherry Lane Theater, as it coincides with its simultaneous World Premiere production, still running at Chicago's The Raven Theater, through May 27, 2018.
