The Kennedy Center to Welcome New York City Ballet, 3/1-6

New York City Ballet returns to the Kennedy Center for their annual engagement, March 1-6, 2016, performing two exciting and distinctively different programs of repertory, including the D.C. premiere of NYCB Resident Choreographer and Soloist Justin Peck's first narrative work, The Most Incredible Thing and a staging of August Bournonville's La Sylphide by Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins, as well as additional works by George Balanchine, August Bournonville, and Christopher Wheeldon. BWW Review: NEW YORK CITY BALLET Triumphs With 'La Sylphide' and 'Tschaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2'

Peter Martins' reconstruction of the 1836 tragicomedy, 'La Sylphide', and Balanchine's 1972 update of 'Tschaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2' proved to be a particularly felicitous pairing for a February 12th to 18th run at the Koch Theater during New York City Ballet's Winter Season. 'La Sylphide', with choreography by the Danish icon August Bournonville to a score by Herman Lovenskjold, is a masterpiece of surprisingly campy humor plus gorgeous 'white ballet' ensemble work for the ladies. After that opener, the audience is warmed up and ready for one of Mr. B's most ingenious plotless neoclassic treasures.

BWW Reviews: LA SYLPHIDE and HEAR THE DANCE: DENMARK

The Danish choreographer August Bournonville, who predates the NYCBallet's founding by a century, still delights audiences with a repertory cultivated from his Royal Danish Ballet. His aesthetic sparks with joyful spontaneity, and even his most tragic works seem lightly brushed with a pastel warmth. The New York City Ballet attempts to reconcile their modernist magnitude with Bournonville's unselfconscious vitality in their 'Hear the Dance Denmark' program, which includes first act divertissements and the second act 'La Sylphide.'
