Kentucky is home to more barrels of bourbon than people, and ninety-five percent of all of America's native spirit is produced in the Bluegrass State. More than two hundred distilleries once operated in Kentucky, but only sixty-one survived Prohibition. Though the businesses were gone, most of the buildings remained, unused, slowly deteriorating for decades. Now, thanks in large part to the explosion of interest in craft bourbon, many of these historic buildings are being brought back to life, often as new distilleries. With progress, however, comes loss, and the record of what existed at these sites across the Commonwealth is disappearing just as more and more people are interested in bourbon's history.
The World of Art Showcase (WOAS), an international art show dedicated to exhibiting talented artists and creating a community where artists have direct access to their market, has announced that Carol Joy Shannon will be a featured artist at the inaugural event Friday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Raleigh Convention Center, located at 500 S. Salisbury Street. A Raleigh-based painter, Shannon is expected to bring a local flare to the showcase.
Shannon's work has been displayed at multiple local venues, including the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, N.C., the Raleigh Art Commission's Miriam Preston Block Gallery and the United Arts Council of Raleigh, as well as in public and private collections throughout the U.S., Europe and Brazil. She is a founding member of the ChromaZones, a group of 12 regional abstract artists who create several large-format, collaborative works each year to raise funds benefiting local nonprofit groups. She is also a member of Visual Art Exchange and the Durham Art Guild, and participates in several significant juried art festivals every year, including Raleigh's Artsplosure.
Shannon's latest project is titled 'City Series' and depicts large, colorful, architectural abstracts that convey the memories and images she has gleaned while living in various locations throughout the world. She is currently creating a foundation to utilize this project in conjunction with major U.S. cities to raise funds for organizations serving the hungry and the homeless.
For more information on Shannon and the work she will exhibit at WOAS, visit the WOAS website.

About World of Art Showcase:
The World of Art Showcase (WOAS), sponsored by Jerry's Artarama, is an international art show dedicated to exhibiting talented artists and creating a community where artists have direct access to their market. The inception of WOAS arose from a desire to redefine the role art plays in our society - to get back to the grassroots of what art stands for and to revolutionize the way the art market functions. Aligning its vision with that of the Raleigh Arts Commission in transforming the 'City of Oaks' into the 'Creative Capital of the South' WOAS will host its inaugural event at the Raleigh Convention Center the first weekend in November. Audience members will have the opportunity to attend receptions, artist lectures, panel discussions, live art demonstrations and more.
