Film Independent, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, announced nominations this morning for the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Eva Mendes and Jeremy Renner served as presenters and 2011 Spirit Awards host Joel McHale was also on hand. Nominees for Best Feature include 127 Hours, Black Swan, Greenberg, The Kids Are All Right and Winter's Bone.

Morgan Freeman has been selected by the American Film Institute's (AFI) Board of Trustees to receive the 39th AFI Life Achievement Award, the highest honor for a career in film, it was announced today by Sir Howard Stringer, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees.

ACT's 2010 Mainstage season continues with a savagely funny new comedy, The Female of the Species by Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith, June 18-July 18, 2010. This Seattle premiere is loosely based on a real-life incident when feminist icon, author, and professor Germaine Greer was attacked and held hostage in her home in the British countryside by a college co-ed obsessed with the famous writer.

Production has begun on One Day, the feature film version of the internationally praised novel of the same name by David Nicholls, which this month enters The New York Times bestseller list. The U.K.'s Film4 is co-financing.

The most talked-about film at this year's Sundance Film Festival, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT is directed by Lisa Cholodenko (High Art, Laurel Canyon) from an original screenplay that she wrote with Stuart Blumberg (Keeping the Faith). Jimmy Smits is set to host 'A Capitol Fourth' for PBS on July 4. This year will be the 30th Anniversary of the special 4th of July celebration. The show will include a concert and fireworks.
