BWW REVIEW: Tamara Tunie in AMERICAN SON at Barrington Stage Company
by Justin J Sacramone
- Jul 17, 2016
Kendra Ellis-Connor is living every mother's worst nightmare. Her son is missing. It's now four o'clock in the morning and she's at the police station trying to get answers. The officer working the nightshift is useless, her ex-husband isn't picking up his phone and the speculations are beginning to consume her. Her son's disappearance and the station's lack of information raise questions. Kendra has a hunch why. Both she and her son are black. American Son, a new play by Christopher Demos-Brown which ran at the Barrington Stage Company from June 17 through July 9, 2016 is a turbulent parable of America's systemic racism.

by Melissa Giordano
- Jul 13, 2016
Of the many productions that will come and go of the Tony award winning musical Hairspray, the incarnation at the Smithtown Performing Arts Center is incredibly enjoyable. Running through August 28th under the excellent direction of Long Island theatre vet Jordan Hue, the talented cast will leave you singing the Marc Shaiman/Scott Wittman score for weeks. To add, the book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan will indeed stand the test of time as we progress towards full equality at every level.

I can't even tell you how many times I have had a conversation that goes something like this: 'Why do I do this?' As an actor this can feel like a hard question to answer. I believe the arts are incredibly important in our world, especially in times when it is difficult to see past the heartbreaking events that seem to be occurring more and more frequently around the globe. But I have found that it can be challenging for me to explain the inherently intangible yet far reaching benefits of theatre and the arts.
