Official: Oscar Isaac to Play Title Role of Theatre for a New Audience's HAMLET in 2017

Theatre for a New Audience announces that as part of its 2016-2017 season at Polonsky Shakespeare Center, Golden Globe Award winner Oscar Isaac will play the title role in Hamlet staged by Sam Gold.  Oscar Isaac and Sam Gold last worked together on Zoe Kazan's We Live Here in 2011.Hamlet is their first collaboration on Shakespeare and their first production with Theatre for a New Audience. Hamlet will begin previews on June 4, 2017 for an opening June 22 and run through July 30.

Auditorium Theatre Sets 2016-17 Season

The Auditorium Theatre  announces another season of exciting, diverse programming which supports its commitment to presenting the finest performances in international and local dance, along with America's most cherished music, to Chicago. Highlights of the Auditorium's 2016-17 season include Cole Porter 125 - A Birthday Celebration, featuring Chicago singers and musicians; Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater in their "Made in Chicago" Dance Series debut;  the return of Eifman Ballet's Red Giselle; and a new, innovative ballet by Dance Theatre of Harlem's Francesca Harper.

Immersive Multimedia Work IDIOT to Play HERE This Spring

As part of its 2015-2016 Producing Season, HERE presents the Artistic Director production, IDIOT, conceived by writer Robert Lyons (Text) and HERE Artistic Director Kristin Marting (Director, Choreographer), adapted from Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Idiot.

Center for Performance Research to Launch Performing Arts Technical Residency

Center for Performance Research (CPR), an artist-driven organization co- founded by Jonah Bokaer & Chez Bushwick and John Jasperse & Thin Man Dance, Inc. to support the development of new works in contemporary dance, announced today its first ever fully supported technical residency offering artists access to a completely customizable performance space and laboratory. CPRs 1,845 sq ft theater features a LED lighting system; making it one the most technically advanced venues of its size offering technical residencies within the five boroughs. The inaugural residency, generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, will support the work of artist collective The Median Movement comprised of choreographers Xan Burley and Alex Springer, sound designer Will Owen, movement artist Hsiao-Jou Tang, and lighting designer Andy Dickerson. The Median Movement will be in residence at CPR from May 1-7, 2016.

Tony Nominee Jonathan Hadary to Star in INDIAN SUMMER at Playwrights Horizons

Playwrights Horizons has announced casting for INDIAN SUMMER, the world premiere of a new play by Gregory S. Moss (Reunion, punkplay, Billy Witch, La Brea, Orange Hat Grace, House of Gold), directed by Carolyn Cantor (Fly by Night, The Great God Pan, After the Revolution, Essential Self-Defense at PH; Pumpgirl; Orange Flower Water; Stone Cold Dead Serious).  Commissioned by Playwrights Horizons, the play is the sixth and final production of the theater company's acclaimed 2015/2016 Season.   

UW World Series to Become Meany Center for the Performing Arts

The University of Washington announced today that the UW World Series, one of Seattle's leading performing arts presenters, will begin the 2016-17 Season under a new name and identity: Meany Center for the Performing Arts. The change reflects an expanded, more dynamic role as a world-class center for performance, public engagement, learning and creative research in the arts.

Tickets to New York Premiere of INDECENT at Vineyard Theatre Now on Sale

Vineyard Theatre, in association with La Jolla Playhouse and Yale Repertory Theatre, has announced that tickets are now on sale as of today, March 22 at noon for the New York premiere of INDECENT, a new play with music, written by Paula Vogel, created by Paula Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, and directed by Rebecca Taichman, at The Vineyard (108 East 15th Street). WaterTower Sets THE BIG MEAL Cast, Creative Team

?WaterTower Theatre Producing Artistic Director Terry Martin today announced casting and creative team details for the regional premiere of Dan LeFranc's The Big Meal, directed by Emily Scott Banks.   The ensemble cast features John S. Davies, Lois Sonnier Hart, Jakie Cabe, Sherry Hopkins, Garret Storms, Kia Boyer, Alex Duva and Kennedy Waterman.  Making their WaterTower Theatre debuts will be Jakie Cabe, Alex Duva, Lois Sonnier Hart and Kennedy Waterman.

Berkeley Rep Sets Summer Residency Lab Projects

Today, The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep's Center for the Creation and Development of New Work announces that it has selected 18 projects for its fifth Summer Residency Lab featuring works from more than 30 talented artists. This June, as part of an extraordinary laboratory for collaboration, some of the nation's most prominent and promising writers, directors, designers, performers, and composers will unite at the Theatre's Harrison Street campus over an intense four-week period to share ideas, break bread, and create new plays. Dozens more local and out-of-town actors and directors will join the Summer Residency Lab, bringing the number of participating artists close to 100.

Sundance Institute Announces Projects for Theatre Lab in MENA

Sundance Institute today announced the eight new projects selected for its pilot Theatre Lab in the MENA region, held in Morocco, May 2016. The Lab is part of the Institute's international cultural exchange programs for independent artists, which include a new, multi-year commitment to support artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), broadening the work of its East African Theatre Exchange over the past 15 years. For the Lab, the Institute will provide promising, fresh voices from the U.S. and MENA region with a rigorous artistic retreat and new opportunities for cross-cultural discovery, artistic reflection and creative experimentation.

Vineyard's Co-Production of INDECENT Begins Performances Next Month Off-Broadway

Vineyard Theatre, in association with La Jolla Playhouse and Yale Repertory Theatre, will present the New York premiere of INDECENT, a new play with music, written by Paula Vogel, created by Paula Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, and directed by Rebecca Taichman, at The Vineyard (108 East 15th Street) with previews beginning April 27 and opening night set for May 17. INDECENT features music composed by Lisa Gutkin (KLEZMATICS) and Aaron Halva (RED NOSES) and choreography by David Dorfman (GREEN VIOLIN). 

Cleveland Orchestra & Franz Welser-Most to Premiere New Opear & Ballet in April

On April 7-10, 2016 The Cleveland Orchestra, Music Director Franz Welser-Most, and The Joffrey Ballet will perform a double-bill of staged opera and ballet in four performances at Severance Hall. The performances feature two works by 20th-century Hungarian composer Bela Bartok: his gritty and tragic ballet The Miraculous Mandarin and the operatic psychological thriller, Bluebeard's Castle. Chicago's The Joffrey Ballet and Artistic Director Ashley Wheater continue their long-term partnership with The Cleveland Orchestra with this production featuring newly commissioned choreography and staging for both Bartok works under the direction of choreographer Yuri Possokhov. Bluebeard's Castle features two renowned singers, bass Mikhail Petrenko and soprano Katarina Dalayman, and members of The Joffrey Ballet in this riveting drama of a man introducing his new wife to the secrets of his past. Both productions' set, lighting, and projections are designed by Alexander V. Nichols with costume design by Mark Zappone and costume construction by Mark A Zappone & Co.

University of Washington Receives $750,000 Mellon Grant

A three and a half year, $750,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has been awarded to the University of Washington to pilot a new Creative Fellowships Initiative that will explore the nature of creative research at a top public research university. The interdisciplinary Initiative will advance the field of performing arts by supporting artists in the development of new work and by integrating the performing arts disciplines into the broader curriculum. This is the first time the University's performing arts units, the Schools of Music and Drama, DXArts, UW World Series and the Dance Program have joined together for an experiment of this scale.
