Voces meaning "voices" in Italian seemed to be the most appropriate title for this past weekend's BalaSole Dance Company's performance at the Joan Weill Center for Dance at the Ailey Citigroup Theatre. Under the executive and artistic direction of Roberto Villanueva, the company provides its dancers with the means to explore their own process of dance-making and present their work.
Jim Caruso's Cast Party has been jokingly called "the Ellis Island of Cabaret," because at one time or another, all great talent seems to come through the historic Birdland doors. Monday night, September 10th, was certainly no exception, and even a little more star-filled than usual. Long-time Cast Party stalwart, Liza Minnelli showed up with concert superstar Michael Feinstein to celebrate her return to "Arrested Development," and his new gig as lead conductor of the Pasadena Pops. On Monday night, the Broadway at Birdland concert series was proud to present Jeremy Kushnier in concert. His special musical guests included former leading ladies Jennifer Laura Thompson, Tarea Campbell, wife Jenny Lee Stern and his co-star in the current Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar, Paul Nolan. Sonny Paladino was musical director for the evening.
Last night, Jim Caruso's Cast Party was once again packed with extraordinary talent from all segments of the entertainment scene! Ukulele sensation Jake Shimabukuro dazzled the audience after his in-store appearance in The Apple Store, Birdland regular Gabrielle Stravelli and legendary jazzer Lodi Carr both offered swinging tunes, Giles Terera (from the West End's Avenue Q and The Rat Pack: Live At The Sands) sang from the heart, and theater composer Micah Young debuted a new song performed by singers Matt Leisy and Whitney Basher, both currently in The Fantastiks off-Broadway.
