BARBER SHOP CHRONICLES takes you on a cultural exchange trip across the continent of Africa, with a side journey to the UK, to meet and listen in on communities of men who go to the barber shop for much more than a shave and a haircut. Focusing on the relationships of men with fathers, children, friends, and lovers, playwright Inua Ellams provides an intimate view of a time-honored tradition. An ensemble of twelve populates the stage with 30 characters who give a lively, colorful performance.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Georgetown University's Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics (The Lab) present Lab PerForum, a series of public discussions and workshops with artists from the Kennedy Center's WORLD STAGES series. The runaway success of Inua Ellams' highly acclaimed play Barber Shop Chronicles continues as today Kate McGrath, Director of Fuel, is delighted to confirm that Barber Shop Chronicles will tour the UK from March 2019. Working closely with a national partnership of venues (including Leeds Playhouse, Birmingham Rep, Bristol Old Vic and Royal Exchange Manchester with Contact) Fuel is thrilled that the UK tour of Barber Shop Chronicles will be supported by a grant from Arts Council England. This support will help the production to attract new, young and diverse audiences with a minimum of 10% of all available tickets across the entire tour will be made available for free via local engagement initiatives aimed at young people who traditionally wouldn't attend theatre performances.
UCLA's Center for the Art of Performance (CAP UCLA) presents the West Coast premiere of Nigerian-born, UK-based poet, playwright and performer Inua Ellams' celebrated play Barber Shop Chronicles, a co-production of Fuel, National Theatre and West Yorkshire Playhouse, from Thursday, Oct. 18 to Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Freud Playhouse, UCLA.

Inua Ellams' dynamic new play debuted last June, to critical acclaim. Following its successful run at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Barber Shop Chronicles returns to the National with a bang. The story takes its audience to barber shops in Peckham, Johannesburg, Lagos, Accra, Harare and Kampala.
Following the sell out run at the National Theatre this summer extra dates have now been added for the return of Inua Ellams' play Barber Shop Chronicles to the Dorfman this autumn, now opening on 20 November and in repertoire until the 9 January. Tickets go on sale at midday on Thursday 31 August.

Further to a hugely successful opening at the Dorfman Theatre on June 7th, Kate McGrath at Fuel today is delighted to confirm that Barber Shop Chronicles will return to the National Theatre as part of its autumn season which was announced this morning. Dates will be announced in due course.

Responding to a world where the movement of people is never far from the front pages, theatre producers Fuel are developing and presenting several projects with artists that address the most pressing issue of our time. Some are at early stages of development, some have new tour dates to announce, and some entirely new works will premiere. Among the new works will be The Hartlepool Monkey, produced in association with Stratford Circus Arts Centre and created by Gyre & Gimble, who met while working as puppeteers on the original production of War Horse.
