After last season's much-buzzed-about Butterfly and Carmen, HEARTBEAT OPERA-the daring young company whose unconventional orchestrations and stagings of classic operas have been called 'a radical endeavor' by Alex Ross in The New Yorker-returns to Baruch Performing Arts Center with its fourth annual Spring Festival May 2-13, 2018. Heartbeat premieres adaptations of two operatic masterpieces, both radically staged, trimmed down and re-orchestrated: Mozart's DON GIOVANNI and Beethoven's FIDELIO.
It was delightful to screen the World Premiere of OLD DOG from producer/director Sally Rowe at the Sarasota Film festival. Who doesn't love a story about dogs! They are faithful, smart and for some reason love us humans unconditionally. So this story of a New Zealand farmer, Paul Sorenson, who developed new herding techniques for his dogs, piqued my interest.
Cristian Macelaru made a favorable impression as guest conductor here last year and was scheduled to return again, a sign that he may have been on the short list of possible choices for Jahja Ling's replacement. But the San Diego Symphony has selected Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare as its new music director. That may have been a factor in M?celaru's decision to step in for Franz Welser-Most with the Gewandhaus Orchestra instead of appearing at the Jacobs Music Center in San Diego this past weekend. Not a problem. Young American conductor Case Scaglione did not disappoint as Macelaru's replacement.

wild Up, under the direction of conductor Christopher Rountree, is an adventurous Los Angeles-based chamber orchestra committed to creating visceral, thought-provoking musical happenings. For its debut at The Wallis, wild Up: Future Folk explores music from ancient India, modern California, post-war New York, as well as American works rooted in folk ethos. wild Up: Future Folk takes place Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 7:30pm in the Bram Goldsmith Theater at The Wallis. These works received their world premieres in September at the Short North Stage in Columbus, OH.
World-renowned violinist Joshua Bell and MacArthur 'Genius' winning pianist Jeremy Denk return to Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage on Wednesday, February 7 at 8:00 p.m. for Carnegie Hall's annual Isaac Stern Memorial Concert, playing music by Mozart, Schubert, Jan cek, and Richard Strauss. Longtime collaborators, the duo last performed together in recital in 2010, which The New York Times described as a passionate performance.
