The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) today announces the winners of the 2016 Stephen and Cynthia Rubin Institute for Music Criticism. Lucy Caplan, a PhD candidate at Yale University, was chosen by a panel of prominent national music critics to receive the $10,000 Rubin Prize in Music Criticism for demonstrating outstanding promise in music criticism. The Rubin Prize is intended to support further study in the field of music criticism and is disbursed over a two-year period. The Institute, as part of its mission to initiate public discourse on the topic of music criticism, also invited audience members to critique a concert by the San Francisco Symphony. John Masko of Rhode Island, a graduate student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, was selected by the panel as the recipient of the $1,000 Everyone's a Critic Audience Review Prize.
The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) proudly announces the third biennial gathering of the groundbreaking Stephen and Cynthia Rubin Institute for Music Criticism, taking place October 20-24. The first program of its kind to focus on the art of classical music criticism, the Rubin Institute brings together leading music critics, renowned musicians, and aspiring young writers for an intensive week of keynote addresses by critics, public performances, discussion panels, and critical reviews. The Institute will culminate with the awarding of the $10,000 Rubin Prize in Music Criticism to one of the university-level writers for demonstrating exceptional promise in music criticism, and the $1,000 Everyone's a Critic Audience Review Prize for the best review by an audience member of a concert performed during the Institute.
The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) opens its 95th season with a celebration of the centennial of the Pulitzer Prize with Become Ocean on October 8, 2016. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams will join the SDSO for a three-day residency starting October 6, impacting multiple areas of our community.
On Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 7pm, Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik, known for his 'dark-hued tone and razor-sharp technique' (The New York Times) and pianist/composer Timo Andres, will perform a concert at National Sawdust (80 North 6th St.). The performance is part of Andres' engagement as a National Sawdust curator for the 2016-2017 season, and will include a selection of works from Kutik's new album, Words Fail, out October 28 on Marquis Classics, including two of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words (arr. Friedrich Hermann), the New York premiere of Andres' Words Fail, and the world premiere of Michael Gandolfi's Arioso Doloroso/Estatico, both of which Kutik commissioned for the album. The duo will also perform Nico Muhly's Compare Notes, Stravinsky's Suite Italienne, and the world premiere of Andres' arrangement of a short work by Janacek titled Words Fail.

Featuring actors Alex Ross, Kelsey Lake, Braden Socia, Will Adams, Brandon Murphy, Kelsey Milbourn, Cara Serber, Jacob Nice, and Greg Dulcie, Music City, USA will have two performances, on Sunday, August 21 at 2pm and Monday, August 22 at 7pm, in the Berlene T. and Jarrell R. Milburn Theatre at Amphibian Stage Productions. Mary Catherine Burke will direct and Jacob Nice will music direct.

The fall semester covers music, politics, and social justice, investigating aspects of social and political change in musical commentary from Beethoven's political influences to nineteenth-century French opera to the activism of Lou Harrison. The spring semester concentrates on folk elements and regional traditions in music and literature throughout the repertoire. These domains are explored in the contexts of history, theory, the humanities, and performance.

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) presents the world premiere of Evidence by gifted composer/conductor/poet Matthew Aucoin, the Metropolitan Opera's youngest-ever assistant conductor, who conducts his work tonight, May 14, 8 pm, at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, and Sunday, May 15, 2016, 7 pm, at UCLA's Royce Hall.

The program ends on a glorious note with Schumann's deeply-felt Symphony No. 2 in C major. As the concluding program of LACO's 2015-16 Orchestral Series, the concerts mark the final appearances of LACO's illustrious Principal Oboe Allan Vogel and Principal Flute David Shostac, who are retiring after 85 years of combined service to the Orchestra.
On June 9, National Sawdust, 80 N. Sixth Street, Brooklyn, will present 'Kaze (The Wind) / Harmonic Constellations,' an evening of two premieres starring Mari Kimura, the renowned violinist/composer who is best known for her use of subharmonics and interactive motion sensor technologies. The evening will offer debut performances of 'Kaze (The Wind),' an audio/visual chamber piece composed by Kimura, and 'Harmonic Constellations,' an entrancing work of microtonal harmonies composed for her by Michael Harrison. It will also unveil µgic, a new digital music controller, and launch two CDs.
