Matt has a problem: He can't seem to hit a baseball, no matter how hard he tries. And things aren't much better at school because he mixes up numbers written on the board and everyone laughs. But as a new book released by Dog Ear Publishing reveals, the problem isn't with Matt but with his eyes - he needs glasses.
On the bus ride home from school one day, Matt realizes all of the street signs he's passing are blurry. He knows that can't be right. Instead, it must be his vision. If he starts to wear glasses, however, kids might make fun of him, calling him a nerd or four eyes. But after talking to his mom, he realizes he needs to see an optometrist, a doctor who specializes in testing the eyes. During the exam he realizes he can see clearly for the first time, and once he gets his glasses a transformation of sorts takes place, leading to some surprising results.
'Eyeglasses are a Home Run' works on two levels: as a charming story about a boy whose world changes after he gets glasses and as a gentle reminder about the importance of eye exams for children beyond what a school nurse can provide. The description of Matt's visit to Dr. Levy's office and being fitted for glasses gives children a behind-the-scenes look at vision testing to put them at ease. Colorful illustrations aptly accompany the story.
Two doctors of optometry share the author's concern that children be given annual eye exams because of the relationship between vision and learning.
'As children grow and progress, they face increasing demands on their visual abilities - visual acuity, eye focusing, visual perception, eye-hand coordination to name a few. An early understanding of how to care for their visual health is fundamental and important,' writes Dr. Edward Jacobs of Jacobs Eye Care. 'I found your book to be a wonderful, comforting exercise in entering the 'world' of vision care.'
Dr. Edward Levy of Allendale Family Eye Care, who serves as the model for the optometrist in the book, agrees, 'The absence of simultaneous binocular vision (the ability to use both eyes together as a team) creates stress in the visual system and can lead to difficulties in the classroom as well as the playground. Children who harbor these often-subtle vision conditions are typically misdiagnosed with learning/reading disabilities and may perform below their potential,' he writes. 'I hope (the book) will help to alert its readers as to the complexities of the visual system as well as the importance of proper eyewear.'
This is the first book for author Barbara Lynn Potash, who has a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from American University and spent years as an independent sales representative of eyewear for children and adults. She belongs to the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She now lives in Florida with her dog, Benny, after moving from New Jersey, her home for many years.

British playwright Shelagh Delaney was a precocious young woman with a keen eye for detail and a gift for naturalistic dialogue. She reached the height of her literary fame at 19 with the premiere of her play A TASTE OF HONEY which she wrote in just two weeks. Much to her dismay, Delaney was often called 'an angry young woman' since she grew up in working class Salford, a gritty industrial neighbor of Manchester. And much of that environment is reflected in her Tony Award winning play which tells the story of Jo, a teenage girl abandoned in a working class town by her slatternly mother and her lover, a gentle black sailor who leaves her pregnant when he returns to sea. But it is another outcast, a homosexual man, who cares for her and provides the only true solace Jo has ever known, though he, too, is destined to leave.

Rain and romance fill Capital Repertory Theatre with their touching and humorous staging of John Patrick Shanley's "Outside Mullingar." Though confronting themes such as death, acceptance, and self-discovery, the play is a gentle, comedic telling of a feel good, relatable story for all.
The Blank Theatre opens its 26th season with a new work written and directed by founding artistic director Daniel Henning that explores one of the most controversial events in U.S. history - the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. THE TRAGEDY OF JFK (as told by Wm. Shakespeare) is the result of several decades of research during which time Henning has come to be recognized as an authority on the subject. That, combined with his other great obsession - live theatre - meant it was only a matter of time before LA audiences would see a stage play based on his work.
I rarely use the word brilliant to describe the work I've seen. There are so many good actors, directors and writers in this town that one must be careful not to be too generous and overuse one's praise. Unlike one reviewer who calls everything he sees the best and gives an award of merit to all of them, I choose to be more selective. This is my very first time at Neo Ensemble Theatre under the new artistic direction of Paul Elliott, and I am exceedingly impressed with the acting, direction and particularly the writing. Airport Encounters, onstage at the Lounge on Santa Monica Blvd through October 16 only, is a collection of 10 vignettes that all take place in a big city airport.
The Broadway at Birdland concert series welcomed the return of Miss Coco Peru on Sunday, September 25 and Monday, September 26. BroadwayWorld has photos from the concerts below!
If you're looking for that next musical to fall in love with, or you wonder what the big deal is about musical theatre, I very highly recommend you make your way out to Tigard to see FLY BY NIGHT at Broadway Rose. (Protip: Take a date. And tissues.)
If this is what the end of the GOLDEN AGE OF JUSTIN VIVIAN BOND looks like, here's hoping for an extension.
Before capping off a yearlong celebration of Bond's 25th anniversary of being a performer with a VIVification benefit, v's---Bond's preferred pronoun---GOLDEN AGE was a fever dream, full of charming anecdotes about shared psychoanalysts, spirit guides and Blythe Danner.
On the second evening of the show's four-night run earlier this month, Bond's control over the melodic rasp of v's voice was impeccable. More importantly, v displayed an unmatched talent for controlling the space v's in, owning the entire stage with little more than a gentle sway and the tap of a heel, making Bond's all-out performance look effortless.
