'Eyeglasses are a Home Run' is Released

Matt has a problem: He can't seem to hit a baseball, no matter how hard he tries. And things aren't much better at school because he mixes up numbers written on the board and everyone laughs. But as a new book released by Dog Ear Publishing reveals, the problem isn't with Matt but with his eyes - he needs glasses.

On the bus ride home from school one day, Matt realizes all of the street signs he's passing are blurry. He knows that can't be right. Instead, it must be his vision. If he starts to wear glasses, however, kids might make fun of him, calling him a nerd or four eyes. But after talking to his mom, he realizes he needs to see an optometrist, a doctor who specializes in testing the eyes. During the exam he realizes he can see clearly for the first time, and once he gets his glasses a transformation of sorts takes place, leading to some surprising results.

"Eyeglasses are a Home Run" works on two levels: as a charming story about a boy whose world changes after he gets glasses and as a gentle reminder about the importance of eye exams for children beyond what a school nurse can provide. The description of Matt's visit to Dr. Levy's office and being fitted for glasses gives children a behind-the-scenes look at vision testing to put them at ease. Colorful illustrations aptly accompany the story.

Two doctors of optometry share the author's concern that children be given annual eye exams because of the relationship between vision and learning.

"As children grow and progress, they face increasing demands on their visual abilities - visual acuity, eye focusing, visual perception, eye-hand coordination to name a few. An early understanding of how to care for their visual health is fundamental and important," writes Dr. Edward Jacobs of Jacobs Eye Care. Dr. Edward Levy of Allendale Family Eye Care, who serves as the model for the optometrist in the book, agrees, "The absence of simultaneous binocular vision (the ability to use both eyes together as a team) creates stress in the visual system and can lead to difficulties in the classroom as well as the playground. Children who harbor these often-subtle vision conditions are typically misdiagnosed with learning/reading disabilities and may perform below their potential," he writes. "I hope (the book) will help to alert its readers as to the complexities of the visual system as well as the importance of proper eyewear."

This is the first book for author Barbara Lynn Potash, who has a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from American University and spent years as an independent sales representative of eyewear for children and adults. She belongs to the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She now lives in Florida with her dog, Benny, after moving from New Jersey, her home for many years.
