Review: AMADEUS at REC ROOM ARTS
by Brett Cullum - Sep 28, 2026
At first, when I heard Amadeus as a season opener, I thought, “How safe.” After seeing the show, all I can say is, “How dangerous.”
Review: COME FROM AWAY at Stages Houston
by Jonathan Netek - Sep 25, 2026
Everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing the morning of September 11, 2001, and as a former New Yorker who lived there when it happened, that day is indelibly burned into my memory.
Review: RHINOCEROS at THE CATASTROPHIC THEATRE
by Brett Cullum - Sep 22, 2026
This company is at the top of its game, and the performances of George Parker and Kyle Sturdivant are iconic. But please, let’s progress in our politics and not make them do it again!

Review: BEAUTIFUL PRINCESS DISORDER at CATASTROPHIC THEATRE
by Brett Cullum - Nov 24, 2025
BEAUTIFUL PRINCESS DISORDER by Kathy Ng is many things, including beautiful, weird, funny, sad, touching, and completely random. It is extremely well-acted by a trio of actors, and the design is next-level impressive.
Review: ENDGAME at Catastrophic Theatre
by Brett Cullum - Sep 23, 2025
Before this world ends, you need to see Catastrophic’s staging of ENDGAME starring Greg Dean and directed by Jason Nodler. They never truly seem to be finished with this one, but you can’t honestly expect the world to be here for a revival in thirteen years.
Review: PURLIE VICTORIOUS at Main Street Theater
by Brett Cullum - Sep 20, 2025
PURLIE VICTORIOUS: A NON-CONFEDERATE ROMP THROUGH THE COTTON PATCH is certainly a curiosity, a satire of Jim Crow life written during the throes of the equal rights movement of the early sixties. I feel like it should seem more creaky, more antiquated, and backwards. Unfortunately for us, it is not.
Interview: Krystal Uchem of PURLIE VICTORIOUS at Main Street Theater
by Armando Urdiales - Sep 10, 2025
Main Street Theater continues its season with Ossie Davis’ groundbreaking satire Purlie Victorious, a play that blends sharp humor with a powerful exploration of race, dignity, and resilience. At the heart of the production is Houston actor and costume designer Krystal Uchem, who steps into the role of Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins....
Review: SEVEN ASSASSINS WALK INTO A BAR at Main Street Theater
by Brett Cullum - Feb 10, 2025
SEVEN ASSASSINS WALK INTO A BAR aims for the pop culture jugular and hits it quite well. Audiences are going to have a blast watching this collection of “badasses” compare notes on a misspent life. Dain Geist has an ear for dialogue and a knack for characters.
Review: Stages' OTHELLO: THE REMIX Brings New Energy and Life to Shakespeare in Houston
by Miranda Keating - Jun 2, 2024
Despite my critiques of the show’s content itself, OTHELLO: THE REMIX is certainly a fun night out due to the catchy songs, exciting dance moves, and wonderful performances. I believe that everyone should watch the show, take in the exhilarating music and theatrical pictures, and see for themselves what they take away from the story.
TAKING STEPS Comes to the Main Street Theater This Month
by Stephi Wild - May 7, 2024
Main Street Theater is producing the rollicking British farce, Taking Steps by internationally-acclaimed playwright, Sir Alan Ayckbourn. When the play first premiered in England, on its original opening night, the laughter was so loud it broke the theater's PA system!
Review: IT IS MAGIC at Catastrophic Theatre
by Brett Cullum - Feb 16, 2024
IT IS MAGIC is far from false advertising because this play, this cast, and this team make some pretty strong magic from Mickle Maher’s latest play. Just sit back, relax, and let it all wash over you is my advice. It’s funny, it’s quirky, and it is unlike anything else you are likely to see anytime soon. CATASTROPHIC THEATRE has always promised to destroy us, and they seem to be inching closer and closer… and closer. This is the next step in their nefarious plan.
