The Theater Project (TheTheaterProject.org), a leading incubator for rising talent and a showcase for New Jersey artists, will reopen for live performances in Maplewood, NJ's Burgdorff Cultural Center on July 7.
Artistic Director Mark Spina notes that The Theater Project (TPP) was “off to a running start” in January 2020. Having just moved to their new home in Union, TPP was running their monthly new play reading series, Opening Nights in the Afternoon, and had just wrapped up their one-act play competition.
At 7:30 PM, Friday, June 1, The Theater Project will honor Fatimah Raymond, Director of Economic Development and Union Township's Center Business District, at a preshow wine and cheese reception open to all ticket holders.
KALEIDOSCOPE KABARET, an annual presentation of short plays written by The Theater Project's member playwrights, is being hosted in Union Center by Unity Bank, in a cleverly converted annex at its Union branch. This is the latest of a series of POP UP Theater events designed to bring entertainment to Union and foot traffic to the Downtown Center.
Combining bold design with drama, stagecraft and symbolism, this contemporary telling of a classic Chinese play is the story of a man who dreams an entire life only to wake up in the inn where he started. Performed in in Mandarin with English surtitles and with strikingly colourful costumes by one of the lead costume designers on the Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony, TheHandan Dream began life in Guangzhou and has been performed at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, as well as touring internationally. The show will be performed at Hackney Empire in the lead up to Chinese News Year on 16th February in the city that hosts the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations outside Asia.

Coming to Hackney Empire from 25th 27th January, The Handan Dream is a contemporary play retelling a classic Chinese tale. The show is directed by Wang Xiaodi, an award-winning Chinese director who is herself the daughter of a famous female director.
