BWW Review: AS YOU LIKE IT at Brave Spirits Theatre

'I like this place, and willingly could waste my time in it.' This line, spoken by Celia (Rebecca Speas) early in As You Like It, is an appropriate way to describe the vibe of Brave Spirits Theatre's new production of Shakespeare's comedy, directed by Jessica Aimone. It's an amiable production of one of the most laid-back plays in the canon, led by a charismatic cast whose chief concern is our entertainment. On that front, it's a success.

BST Presents Shakespeare's AS YOU LIKE IT With Original Music

Escape to the forest of Arden with a romantic and immersive production of As You Like It. Four charming couples swoon, banter, argue, and fall deeply in love against the background of an original, modern score. This production reunites the team behind our entertaining, touching, and bittersweet production of A Midsummer Night's Dream: director Jessica Aimone and music director and composer Zach Roberts. Join Brave Spirits Theatre for the wedding of the year!

BWW Review: Gender SWITCH from The Welders at Fringe Logan Arts Space

Talk about 'Freaky Friday.' Brett Abelman's new play 'Switch,' at Fringe Logan Arts Space, is more like 'Freaky Pride Weekend.' A straight D.C. couple matched up by their mutual genderqueer friend find themselves in the afterglow of intimacy having switched bodies and hence gender. The balance of the play is exploring the abrupt switch amid Pride Weekend and trying to figure out how or whether they should try to switch back.

Announcing The BEYOND THE BINARY Series During The Run Of SWITCH

Brett Abelman's Switch, running June 7th - 23rd at the Logan Fringe Arts Space, will open select show evenings with a short but mighty performance series Beyond The Binary.  The Welders -- Washington's only playwrights' collective devoted exclusively to developing and producing new work -- are excited to host a variety of DC artists as an entry into Abelman's comedy about body-swapping, belly laughs, and uncanny sex.

BWW Review: Brave Spirits Theatre Presents a Powerful CORIOLANUS

Brave Spirits Theatre again provides a fresh, immediate take on a Shakespearean classic, this time with a hard-hitting production of CORIOLANUS, directed by Charlene V. Smith. Underappreciated compared to many of Shakespeare's other plays, it's particularly timely in 2018 as it explores a power struggle among great men and the masses they're supposed to serve.

BST Presents THE TROJAN WOMEN PROJECT In Repertory With CORIOLANUS

BST's 2018 repertory explores war and winning from opposite perspectives. As civil unrest threatens political upheaval, the war hero Coriolanus is driven to defend and then destroy his own country. Shakespeare's last tragedy takes a piercing look at men who cannot leave war behind. Performed as part of the Women's Voices Theater Festival, The Trojan Women Project explores the timeless story of The Trojan Women to illuminate modern women's relationships to sexuality, politics, and violence. This intersectional look at American women asks why our gender isn't enough to unite us and whether we are the losers in the American Dream.

BWW Review: THE HEIDI CHRONICLES at Rep Stage - A classic Play Gets Revisited

Take a trip in time as you revisit the 1950's to the 1980's with the music of each era to help with the journey (thank you Sound Designer Sarah O'Halloran) with THE HEIDI CHRONICLES at Rep Stage.

BWW Review: A Generation and a Movement Considered in THE HEIDI CHRONICLES at The REP

The play has aged well. Women are, of course, still grappling with some of the issues that Heidi confronts. But it is not the specific issues that make the play last and lead me to predict that there will be revivals a century hence. One thing is for sure: the pop culture time-stamps like specific songs redolent of particular years will surely almost certainly elude our grandchildren. But the interplay between bright, somewhat idealistic people and their times is bound to continue, and stories about that interplay are bound to go on holding the attention.
