"What's the earliest memory you have of your father?" This is the question, among many, that sets off a process of enquiry into the state of the nation's masculinity and its concerns through the prism of fatherhood in the verbatim play Fatherland. Thrillingly staged, it muscles beyond its documentary origins to excavate beneath the surface of a typically reticent, bloke-y nonchalance with great aplomb.

This bold new production, by Scott Graham, Karl Hyde and Simon Stephens, focusing on contemporary fatherhood in all its complexities and contradictions, premiered at the Royal Exchange Theatre as part of Manchester International Festival. Fatherland will open in May at the Lyric Hammersmith and will be a part of the 2018 LIFT festival.

Last week, Matilda the Musical - that soaring celebration of storytelling - marked its fifth year in the West End. Appropriately enough, the show begins with a birthday party in the marvellously caustic "Miracle" (over 41,000 balloons have been used since the show opened at the Cambridge Theatre), and the audience was invited to join the party, treated to birthday cupcakes in the interval. No word on whether Bruce Bogtrotter made a play for them first…

Ahead of celebrations for its fifth birthday in the West End this autumn and Roald Dahl's centenary on 13 September, the Royal Shakespeare Company's multi award-winning production of Matilda The Musical has announced that Sara Sheen and Abbie Vena will join Zaris-Angel Hator and Clara Read in the title role from 13 September 2016. Tickets for the new booking period, which includes performances at the Cambridge theatre between 30 May and 15 October 2017, will go on sale on the centenary of Roald Dahl's birth, 13 September.

New production images of the cast of the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Matilda The Musical are now available. Evie Hone and Lizzie Wells have joined Anna-Louise Knight and Lara McDonnell in the title role, alongside Michael Begley (Mr Wormwood), Miria Parvin (Miss Honey) and Rebecca Thornhill (Mrs Wormwood). Craige Els will continue in the role of Miss Trunchbull. Matilda The Musical, which celebrates its 4th birthday on Sunday 25 October, is now booking at the Cambridge Theatre until 18 December 2016.

Artistic Director of Theatre Royal Plymouth Simon Stokes today announces the full cast for the world premiere of April de Angelis' After Electra. Samuel West directs Michael Begley (Roy), Rachel Bell (Sheila), Marty Cruickshank (Virgie), Kate Fahy (Sonia), Neil McCaul (Tom), Veronica Roberts (Haydn), James Wallace (Orin) and Eleanor Wyld (Miranda). The production opens on 16 March at The Drum, Theatre Royal Plymouth, with previews from 12 March, and runs until 28 March, before transferring to the Tricycle Theatre from 7 April to 2 May.
