Palm Beach Dramaworks to Present THE LION IN WINTER, Begin. 12/6

King Henry II and his estranged wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, are celebrating Christmas with their three sons, and you're invited to join them. But be prepared to experience duplicity, backstabbing and caustic barbs when Palm Beach Dramaworks presents James Goldman's classic comic-drama,The Lion in Winter opening on Friday, December 6 (8pm) at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre (201 Clematis Street). Performances are scheduled through January 5, with specially priced previews on December 4 and 5.

Based on actual historical events, this sharp and witty play is set in 1183 in Henry's palace where the future of England is at stake and everyone's selfishly plotting to force Henry to name his successor!

The Lion in Winter will be directed by Producing Artistic Director William Hayes, and features C. David Johnson(Henry), Tod Randolph (Eleanor), along with Katherine Amadeo, Justin Baldwin, Cliff Burgess, Chris Crawford, andPierre Tannous. Scenic design is by Michael Amico, costume design by Brian O'Keefe, lighting design by Ron Burns, and sound design by Matt Corey.

The original production of The Lion in Winter opened on Broadway on March 3, 1966, and starred Robert Preston and RoseMary Harris. It was followed by the hugely successful 1968 film starring Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn. It is now the most celebrated of Goldman's plays. In 2003, The Lion in Winter was filmed as a TV movie, starring Patrick Stewart and Glenn Close.

James Goldman (1927-1998) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and novelist. His plays include Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole (written with his brother, William Goldman), They Might Be Giants (later made into a movie), A Family Affair(music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb), and Follies(music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim). He won the Academy Award for his screen adaptation of The Lion in Winter. Among his other films are Nicholas and Alexandra, and Robin and Marian.

Palm Beach Dramaworks is a non-profit, professional theatre and is a member of the Theatre Communications Group, the South Florida Theatre League, Southeastern Theatre Conference, Florida Professional Theatres Association, Florida Theatre Conference, and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council. For fourteen years, West Palm Beach's only professional, multi-award-winning resident theatre has brought to the Palm Beaches a distinguished roster of plays under the guidance of Producing Artistic Director William Hayes.

The performance schedule is as follows: Evening performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8PM and Sunday at 7PM. Matinee performances are on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2PM. Individual tickets are $60 for all performances. Preview performances are $52 and Opening Night tickets are $75. Student tickets are available for $10. Group rates for 20 or more and discounted season subscriptions are also available.
