Orlando Shakespeare Theater Partnering with Two Charities During LES MISERABLES Run

Orlando Shakespeare Theater in Partnership with UCF and the cast of LES MISERABLES join with two leading charities, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, to raise awareness and support for the issues of HIV/AIDS and hunger.

Orlando Shakes and Second Harvest Food Bank, as well as food banks across the nation, will participate in Hunger Action Month this September. Les Mis ticket holders are encouraged to bring two or more non-perishable food items when they attend their selected performance now through September 30. All donations can be dropped off in the lobby's collection barrel, and participating guests will receive a voucher for $5 off an upcoming Signature Series performance. "While Victor Hugo's passionate story is one of survival, many of its characters are impoverished and hungry," said Artistic Director Jim Helsinger. "We've partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank to stand up for hunger relief and the 1 in 6 people in the United States that struggle with hunger every day."

Additionally, the Theater hopes to increase public awareness and alleviate the suffering of individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. Following every performance, the cast of LES MISERABLES will collect donations on behalf of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA), one of the nation's foremost industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations. "HIV/AIDS is an issue that remains close to the theater community's heart. The success of Les Mis has created an important opportunity to show our support," said Helsinger.

In 2014, BC/EFA has awarded over $5.6 million to more than 450 HIV/AIDS and family service agencies across the country, including the Central Florida Haven of Hope Ministries in Orlando. Donations can also be made online at http://www.broadwaycares.org/donate.
