Holiday Time Around the World Plays The Rose

By: Dec. 09, 2011

Holiday Time Around the World is set to play December 26 – 30 at The Rose. Kids and adults alike will learn fascinating stories about familiar and exotic traditions in this interactive show that takes audiences from Germany to Africa, China and beyond.

"We all know about putting tinsel on a tree and giving poinsettias as a holiday gift, but where did those traditions come from?" asked Director Amanda Kibler. "This show crosses borders and time periods to illustrate the international influence of our own customs, as well as important celebrations unique to other cultures like Chinese New Year and Kwanzaa."

What does Kwanzaa's principle of Umogo mean to a group of Kenyan animals? Who's the
Christmas Spider that gave Germans the tradition of tinsel on a tree? How do Jewish children
play dreidel, and what does it have to do with the beginning of Hanukah? These questions
and more will be answered in a fun, exciting way in The Rose's original production written by
playwright-in-residence Brian Guehring.

"Kids love the interactive element of the show, in which we bring audience members on stage to "time travel" with the wacky Professor Stanley," said Kibler. "Stanley and the kids make for the Globe with a high-energy show as they explore the diverse cultures, and the time machine makes for a creative way to link the unique settings."

Holiday Time Around the World will be presented on December 26th at 2 & 4:30 pm; December 27th and 28th at 2 & 7 pm and December 29th and 30th at 2, 4:30 & 7 pm on

The Rose Theater's Main Stage, 2001 Farnam Street. Tickets are $16 each and available at the door or in advance by calling The Rose Box Office at (402) 345-4849.

The Rose Theater's 2011-12 season is sponsored by Children's Hospital & Medical Center. Show sponsors for Holiday Time Around the World include Security National Bank, Nobbies, Superhits 99.9 KGOR, Expedoodle.com and the Nebraska Arts Council.
