The Theater Project Solicits for New Short Plays for First Annual Competition FAST FORWARD

By:

The Theater Project, an award-winning, professional theater in Maplewood, NJ, is now soliciting short plays for "Fast Forward," its first annual short play competition February 14-16, 2014. The contest is open to adult playwrights in the New Jersey-New York area.

The Theater Project, which also offers a competition for high school playwrights and presentations of original plays by New Jersey authors, sees this as a logical extension of its mission. "Recognizing the artists in our own neighborhoods brings out the artist in each of us," says associate producer Daaimah Talley. "The Theater Project is always looking for ways to nurture that kind of self-expression and the reflection it creates in audiences and authors. We believe it builds better communities and more thoughtful neighbors."

Plays can be either dramas or comedies but must be no more than 15 minutes running time. Finalists will be chosen by December 15 and invited to present their work to audiences and judges at the FAST FORWARD opening rounds, Friday and Saturday, February 14 and 15. Those plays selected by vote as "Critics' Choice" and "Audience Favorite" will advance to the Sunday, February 16 finals and compete for a $500 grand prize. These performances will be open to the public and take place at The Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts in Maplewood, NJ.

Complete submission details are available on the company's web site, TheTheaterProject.org. The competition accepts electronic submissions only at OneActFest@TheTheaterProject.org. Include in the Subject line: "Submission + the Title of Your Play."

The Theater Project, a professional theater company based in Maplewood, NJ, began in 1994 with the goal of bringing the best contemporary plays to our community. The company is known for presenting outrageous comedy as well as drama with social commentary. Last November, the company tackled marriage equality, presenting a one-night-only reading of "8" by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, the play chronicling the historic California challenge to same-sex marriage.
