The Drilling Company, well known for short plays around common themes and free Shakespeare in the Parking Lot on the Lower East Side, begins 2010 with the American premiere of Bird Brain by Vern Theissen, a play for all audiences.

Bird Brain is a lively comedy adapted from the Albert Wendt story of the same name about a hard working woodsman confronted with a terrible problem: obey the laws of the land or protect the birds in his hat. The production is marked with puppets, live music and an abundance of hats. 

Thiessen is the recipient of the Governor General's Literary Award, Canada's highest honour for playwriting. with Anwen Darcy, Aimee Whelan and Hamlton Clancy, show features the design of jennifer Varbalow, Chris Rummel and Miriam Crowe.

The Drilling Company discovers, develops , and produces new socially provocative American dramatists. The company endeavors to unite artists and audiences across divides of class, cultural and geographic boundaries. Our primary mission is to cultivate a diverse community of ideas, discovering cleare understnding of themes that bond individuals and communiteis together. Yearly the company embraces the work of the finest original playwright, Shakespeare in the most American of settings - a parking lot.Serving the Upper West Side for ten years the copmpany has produced such works as: Atomic Farmgirl, Over The Line , Mutant Sex Party, Dealers, Big Apples, Windows on the World, Measure for Measure , Henry te Fifth, Twelfth Nith, The Tempest , As You Like It , and Mdsummer Night's Dream. Since 1999 over 200 short plays commissioned and produced including writers such as Brain Dyskstra, Will Eno, P.Seth Bauer, Allison Moore, Vincent Delaeny, C.Denby Swanson, Andrea Moon, Vincent Delaney and Neil Olson.

Bird Brain is performed at The Drilling Company, located at 236 W. 78th Street onSaturday and Sundays at 12 noon. All tickets are $15.
