Swift's 'September 12th' to Play Nuyorican Poets Cafe
The Family Tree Collective will present September 12th, a new play written and directed by Michael Swift. It will be presented from August 23rd through September 15th at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
"September 12th is the story of Bubs and Press, two low-level drug dealers filling orders in the wake of the attacks on September 11 in NYC. After a deal gone wrong, they find themselves accused of attempted murder and thrown into Manhattan's 'Tombs' with criminals and unfortunates unlucky enough to get picked up on September 10th. The system is shutdown and Bubs and Press are forced to wait it out in an underground cell and keep their allegation a secret from the angry, hurt, and confused criminals. September 12th explores the anger caused by the attacks on the WTC and the innocent people that wrath was taken out upon," state press materials.
The cast will include Katherine Barna, Mike Beberich, David C. Marshall, Brian Patrick Murphy, and Chris Perry
Michael Swift was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Fordam University Playwrighting Department and completed his Masters in Scriptwritng from UEA-Norwich, England. He has had staged readings of Fast Life with NY Collective, Juvenilia at TADA! Youth Theater, and Texas Law Men at 37 Arts. His plays Dirt and Whiskey and Galveston were produced at Fordham University. He served as writer and director for Juvenilia with the Minotaur Company in Norwich, England, Francois' Love at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in 2006, the sonic theatre series pilot Chuck Ballard in A Woman Died in Brooklyn at The Clubhouse and again at The 5 Spot in Brooklyn, and Jorge and Martha Ride the Subway and Boomerang, both at 13th Street Repertory Company. Other works include Player, Rumbles, Seven Swift Little Plays, and Hot Lanta.
Family Tree is a diverse group of concerned artists who are driven to produce culturally relevant, original work. Writers, actors, dancers, painters, rappers, designers, and musicians support one another and encourage each other to take risks. Family Tree develops work through readings, jam sessions, and a project called OUTLET: For Artists, For Community, in which performers of all types prepare 10 minutes of material of any kind to perform in front of an audience. All proceeds go to a local charity. In its first year, the organization has produced 12 projects, seen at 22 Catherine, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, 37 Arts, The Clubhouse, 13 Street Repertory Company, Downtown Blues in Omaha, Nebraska, and The 5 Spot Supper Club.
