Manhattan Repertory Theatre Stages THE ARAB for Winterfest 2013, Now thru 3/9

By:

Manhattan Repertory Theatre presents The Arab, a new play by Sylvia Khoury, tonight, March 6th - 9th, 2013.

In The Arab, a young Lebanese medical student, Pierre, trades in his gun for a baguette when he flees a brutal civil war and moves to Paris. As he continues his medical studies in France, he does everything he can to fit in and forget his dark past. Forging a new identity, however, proves increasingly difficult as his carefree façade starts to distance him from those he cares about. The play tackles questions of post-colonial identity and self-perception as well as emotional repression and intimacy. Despite his best efforts, can Pierre ever truly feel French? Can he really become intimate with another person when he is repressing so much of his past?

The Arab is written by Sylvia Khoury, an emerging French and Lebanese-American playwright currently pursuing her MFA in Playwriting at The New School for Drama under the supervision of Laura Maria Censabella and Chris Shinn. Cody Holliday Haefner directs the world-premiere production starring Josh Quat, Victoria Pollack, and Daniel O'Neill. The Arab features dramaturgy by Tom Kapusta, set design by Noriko Ohashi, costume design by Hillary Kritt, sound design by Jess Malcolm, lighting by Camille Simoneau, and graphics by Jiin Choi.

The Arab is produced by a company of young, educated artists that are passionate about making socially-conscious, generationally-relevant theatre. This company last presented The Connected: Bundle #1 at FringeNYC 2012 under the company name Babel and is currently restructuring to be more ensemble driven. The new company name will be revealed the premiere of The Arab. Manhattan Repertory Theatre presents The Arab as part of their WINTERFEST 2013.
