Magic Futurebox Presents BLOODY LULLABIES FOR BRAVE WOMEN World Premiere, Now thru 11/5

Magic Futurebox, an independent theater producer based in Brooklyn, NY, will present BLOODY LULLABIES FOR BRAVE WOMEN at their space in Industry City, tonight, November 1st - 5th, 2012, at 8:00 pm.

Commissioned by Co-Executive Artistic Director Suzan Eraslan as a response to recent widespread political opposition and restricted access to safe, legal abortion, the proceeds from the production of feminist playwright Miranda Huba’s new work will support the New York Abortion Access Fund. The production is directed by Ms. Eraslan and utilizes an all-female cast and creative team donating their talents to the NYAAF’s cause of providing financial assistance to low-income women for abortion services and care.

Deep in an enchanted forest, four women wait in a reproductive health clinic for a doctor who never comes, until a storybook little girl in a red hood rallies them to take matters into their own hands. An abortion fairytale just in time for the election.

MIRANDA HUBA is an award-winning playwright originally from Canada, now based in New York City. Plays include: Hospital City (The Incubator Arts Project) Dirty Little Machine (co-produced by Animal Parts Theatre and Horse Trade Theater Group), and The History of My Domestication (commissioned by Playwrights Theatre Centre, Vancouver and also produced at NYC's The Red Room). Her play, House of KOSA, received its world premiere in Canada as part of Vancouver's acclaimed SEE SEVEN New Theatre Series. She was invited to Vancouver to co-create the site- specific theatre piece, You Are Invited, with HIVE 3 and the Cultural Olympiad for the 2010 Olympics. She has had two works translated into German- a partnership between the Canadian Department of Canadian Heritage and the Theatre Institute in Berlin. In June 2010 she performed her latest one-woman show, Candy Tastes Nice, at HERE in NYC as part of their Summer Sublet Series. Candy Tastes Nice will receive a production at the Kleines Theatre in Salzburg in October 2012 staring Erika Hartman. Huba’s work tends to explore the skewed view of women's sexuality as portrayed in media culture. She holds a BFA from the Simon Fraser University School for the Contemporary Arts. Founded in 2001, the New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF) is a volunteer-run, 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to low-income women in New York State who cannot afford to pay for an abortion. NYAAF, an affiliate of the National Network of Abortion Funds, believes that abortion services should be available to all women regardless of their ability to pay. Without funding, many women do not have a real choice. In the last year alone, NYAAF provided over $62,000 in assistance to help 246 women get abortions they could not otherwise afford.
