Hamlet Isn't Dead Stages HENRY VI, Parts I, II & III in Rep, Beginning Tonight

By:

Hamlet Isn't Dead is proud to present Henry VI parts I, II & III in Repertory over the first three weeks of September at the WOW Cafe Theatre.

One of Shakespeare's least performed histories, Henry VI Parts 1, 2 and 3 (hereafter the 'Henry VI Cycle') is an exciting new adventure from Hamlet Isn't Dead. Directed by Robin Rightmyer, the productions are running in repertory from September 3 to September 20 with two exciting 'marathon' days where audience members can see the rise and fall of Henry VI in one spectacular day. We of Hamlet Isn't Dead think that the Henry VI Cycle more than any other of Shakespeare's plays represents the plight of women in a patriarchy, something that is extremely relevant to society today. As such, our productions highlight the trouble that smart, strong and powerful women (Such as Joan of Arc and Queen Margaret of Anjou) run into when they attempt to fulfill their potential. Through non-traditional casting the Henry VI Cycle also explores gender and sexuality issues, both by having women playing male characters, and changing male characters to female characters (Particularly featuring Suffolk as a lesbian woman forced to hide her own sexuality).

As such, it is perfectly appropriate that we are performing the Henry VI Cycle at the Women's One World Cafe Theater collective in the Bowery. With WOW's long tradition of supporting women's, gay and transgender rights and issues, Hamlet Isn't Dead could not be more thrilled to be offering this project with their help.

Hamlet Isn't Dead is a new company dedicated to performing the complete works of William Shakespeare in chronological order. This will allow us to remove the entrenchments of history that culture places on the texts, and hopefully let us read the plays as if we were reading new work. It also allows us fun insights into the development of Shakespeare as an author, instead of as a legend.

The cycle runs for three weeks:

9/3 (7:30pm) Part 1
9/4 (7:30pm) Part 2
9/6 (3pm/7pm) Part 2/Part 3
