Canned Ham Returns To Dixon Place For March Run

By:

A year and a half after a workshop development of his one-man musical theatrical memoir Canned Ham at Dixon Place, Tom Judson returns to that same stage for the month of March in his new, expanded version of the show. The show has developed into a fresh and tighter production that is now open for review to critics and was recently previewed at a sold-out, one-night-only, benefit for Dixon Place this past November receiving a standing ovation.

Canned Ham is a theatrical memoir detailing Tom's life in all areas of show business: acting in Broadway musicals (Cabaret, 42nd Street) composing music for film and television (Whit Stillman's Metropolitan, Sesame Street) and the work for which he is probably most widely known, appearing in gay adult films as "Gus Mattox." Stories and songs are interwoven with visuals and musical numbers to describe a life that is extraordinary yet-because the story is bookended by the tale of his partner's death from AIDS-all too familiar to many. Tom accompanies himself on the piano, the accordion, the trumpet and nine other instruments - sometimes simultaneously.

Since the first performance of the show last September, Tom has taken Canned Ham around the country, most notably playing to sold-out audiences this past summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Those audiences said they wanted more music! More stories! More visual! And Tom, along with director Kevin Malony, has complied by writing a new, richer version of the show. This will be the only NYC performance of Canned Ham before the show goes on tour across the country.

ABOUT DIXON PLACE
Dixon Place is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 to provide a space for literary and performing artists to create and develop new works in front of a live audience. While other venues of its kind have since died off or now only present established artists, Dixon Place remains at the heart of the New York experimental performance scene. Taking risks is crucial to the life of Dixon Place, its artists and audiences. In April, Dixon Place will launch a year long 25th Anniversary season with special events, parties, and the return of many DP alumni to celebrate a home for new artists to present their evolving work.

Dixon Place's primary commitments are to bring artists and audiences together through live performance in order to expand the understanding of the creative process and its final product, and to provide a supportive environment for emerging artists to present new work. Over the last twenty-three years, Dixon Place has successfully maintained its intimate atmosphere and unique environment while increasing its programming to fulfill the need for performance opportunities for the New York community of performing and literary artists.
