Blue Hill Troupe to Stage Gilbert & Sullivan's PATIENCE

By:

The Blue Hill Troupe, Ltd. http://www.bht.org, the only musical theater group in New York City to donate its net proceeds to charity, will be finishing its 91st season with a modern take on Gilbert & Sullivan's Patience.

The production, with full orchestra, runs April 17-25, 2015 at El Teatro of El Museo del Barrio (1230 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street). Tickets range in price from $28 to $100 and are available online at http://www.bht.org or by calling (212) 988-2012. Payment in excess of $20 per ticket is tax-deductible to the extent provided by law. Student rush tickets are available, and the Sunday matinee features a Children's Backstage Tour.

Since its inception in 1924, the Blue Hill Troupe has produced a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta every spring with lavish production values and full orchestra, donating the net proceeds to a New York City charity. Proceeds from Patience will benefit Jewish Home Lifecare http://www.jewishhome.org/.

Patience satirizes Britain's "aesthetic craze" of the late 1800s. This was a period characterized by prolific poets, composers, painters, and designers of all kinds, by ridiculing it as a meaningless fad. This production has been updated and transplanted to the American Southwest in 1957 and features a Martha Graham-like ladies' dance ensemble fawning over the latest fad - first a Beat poet from New York City, then a Singing Cowboy. As usual, the course of true love runs amok but, eventually, everyone ends up with a suitable partner...or do they??

Patience is directed by Gary Slavin, whose recent Off Broadway credits include Show Choir! - The Musical and the hit political revue Bush Is Bad. Musical direction is by Zachary Schwartzman, an assistant conductor with the American Symphony Orchestra.

Serving New Yorkers of all faiths and ethnicities for 166 years, Jewish Home Lifecare is one of the nation's largest and most diversified not-for-profit geriatric health and rehabilitation institutions. Jewish Home Lifecare meets the needs of over 12,000 older adults each year in their own homes, through assisted and independent housing as well as in post-acute and long-term residences on three campuses in the Bronx, Manhattan and Westchester. Funds raised through this partnership will expand arts programming for residents at all JHL campuses.

In its 91-year history, the Blue Hill Troupe has produced the entire Gilbert & Sullivan canon and more than twenty other musical comedies. In 2005, the Blue Hill Troupe was honored with three awards at the 12th Annual International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, UK, for its innovative production of the G&S rarity, The Grand Duke. The all-volunteer Blue Hill Troupe has been featured in The New York Times, on CBS Sunday Morning and appeared with The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. For fifteen years, they were a mainstay of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Concerts and Lectures series, and they continue to concertize in venues around the city.
