When Richie, a career criminal on the run from the mob for a killing he may or may not have been involved with, is offered clemency through the Witness Protection Program he has the hard task of convincing his waitress girlfriend, Patty, to come with him. Even though she finds his life of violence and physical brutality towards her distressing, Patty deeply loves Richie for reasons of her own. With promises of going straight, marriage and financial subsidy from "the feds" Richie ultimately succeeds in convincing her to join the program with him, leaving her family and individual identity behind.
