Photo Flash: RAISED IN CAPTIVITY At The Shell Theater
by Gabrielle Sierra - Off-Broadway

(01/22/2009) - As part of its 2008-2009 Season of Secrets, the Red Fern Theatre Company will present Nicky Silver's Raised in Captivity from January 29 - February 15, 2008 at the Shell Theatre in the Times Square Arts Building. Dominic D'Andrea directs this play, which the New York Times has called an 'archly absurdist comedy' with 'depth of feeling' in its 1995 incarnation. The current climate of uncertainty and angst demands the instant self-analysis provided by The Red Fern Theatre Company's presentation of Raised in Captivity, a dark comedy about twin siblings who deal with guilt, redemption, self punishment, and revealed secrets following their mother's untimely death. Amidst the seemingly unending economic crisis, this production acts as a satiric mirror for the dysfunction, alienation and depths of depravity possible in a sometimes cold society. The Red Fern Theatre will partner with Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow as part of its ongoing mission to produce socially conscious plays while partnering with philanthropies whose missions assist those affected by the issues addressed in the play. Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow helps disadvantaged youth and adults recognize their own self-worth, and advance towards self-sufficiency and financial security through job training, academic reinforcement, improved life skills, job placement, and support services. More information about the organization can be found at http://www.obtjobs.org. Raised in Captivity will run from January 29th through February 15th. Show times are Thursday - Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 3pm at the Shell Theatre in the Times Square Arts Building at 300 West 43rd Street at Eight Avenue. Tickets are $18. To order, please visit https://www.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/72892 or call 212-352-3101. Tickets are available at the box office 20 minutes prior to the show for cash only.

Photo Flash: Pearl Theatre Company's TWELFTH NIGHT
by Gabrielle Sierra - Off-Broadway

(01/21/2009) - THE PEARL THEATRE COMPANY is pleased to begin the third production of its 25 th Anniversary Season, Shakespeare's capricious comedy, Twelfth Night (Or What You Will). The opening night of THE PEARL THEATRE COMPANY'S production will be on February 2 nd , the same day as the first recorded performance of the play in 1602. A harrowing shipwreck separates twins Viola and Sebastian-but tragedy turns to comedy when they wash up on the shores of Illyria, a land turned upside-down by passion and a colorful cast of joyful, melancholy characters. In THE PEARL THEATRE COMPANY'S production of Twelfth Night, Shakespeare's madcap dance of mistaken identities, cunning plans, and miraculous discoveries, the only real mistake to make is not to love at all. The Play ponders love lost and found and explores the troubled relationship between disguise and desire. Washed up on distant shores, Viola mourns for a brother drowned in a shipwreck she herself narrowly escaped. Viola, however, is no languisher and quickly improvises a plan, disguising herself as the young man 'Cesario,' taking service with Duke Orsino...and shaking the foundations of this strange world. Twelfth Night offers us a world lush and joyful, but twilit, where not everyone can participate in happily ever after-a world that ends in What You Will, the subtitle that reminds the audience not to take it all too seriously-it is a comedy after all. And as such it must be both what we want, and what we make of it. As is love. In Twelfth Night, Shakespeare
