Also, I know it's not happening anytime soon or may not happen at all...but I really miss RENT.

Well, I've been wishing for a revival of HOW TO SUCCEED... for a while, and it looks like this season I get my wish! So I'm very excited for that.

I would also love to see a revival of THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG. Didn't Roundabout or another non-profit company do a reading of that show recently with Sherie Rene Scott and Norbert Leo Butz? I think I remember hearing that cast!

Robert Pattinson? Seriously? I really hope you're joking, although I can really picture Hugh Jackman as Fredrick and Anne Hathaway as Charlotte. But Kellan Lutz, too? Can he sing? I guess you're a really big Twilight fan.

I would love a Passion revival. I didn't like the style of the sets in the original because it felt too bright. I thought I was in an art museum. I loved how the concert staging was just black and gray because, whether intentional or not, it really brought out the dark aspects and pain in the story.

Do you really need to be able to dance to play Charity?? I mean i know it's Fosse and Verdon originated the role, but there isn't THAT much dancing in it - not as much as Velma or Cassie or anything.. I think it's more an acting role than anything.. You need a lot of depth to play that part, and we haven't seen any actress do that yet. So Stone could be great

Dream Revivals?
Posted by ComingUpRoses2 2012-07-11 01:15:52

I think you can get by with Charity if you're not the best dancer in the world. I'd rather a good actor in the part than a good dancer who's a crappy actor. I just know that a lot of people would complain about the dance part. They did it with Applegate, who was a pitch perfect Charity from an acting standpoint.

"I would love to see Sutton Foster as Sally Bowles."

Mmmmmmmm, Sutton lacks the grittiness to play Sally but I'm thinking for the most recent revival of Cabaret. If there was a revival truer to the original then maybe.
Nina Arianda would be my dream Sally.

Dream Revivals?
Posted by My Oh My 2012-07-11 12:36:13

I'd seriously go nuts from excitement at a faithfully reproduced production of the original Evita. I've already seen a very well reproduced production of it twice with Raul Esparza as Che in the late 90s but can't get enough of those thrillingly staged Hal Prince and Larry Fuller moments.

I'm crazy about Les Mis but that show needs a time out after numerous mediocre 'revivals' and anniversary editions. It would be a dream come true to have a production every bit as good as the original one at the Imperial that actually celebrates its iconic, innovative staging instead of hyping up century old staging and scene changing techniques seen in the current tour to compensate. Imagine that, a revival where a production of a musical is celebrated instead of beaten down and original creative team shunned, eh? Sort of like the recent A Chorus Line; why shake things up when shaking them up for the sake of it is the definition of "misguided" and leads to mediocre shadows of great shows? Akjdfbawurgieioejh9r.

As for Dreamgirls, the recent revival tour I enjoyed but was blown away by grainy footage of the original that I found online after seeing it. I had seen a version close to the original but not quite as elaborate. The version I saw (late 90s) had all the original designs, lighting, staging, and choreography but the physical production was simplified for touring much like that one 1987 Broadway revival that featured cast members moving the smaller light towers around. It was thrilling nonetheless, even if the cast was a mixed bag and I don't recall being blown away by the choreography as I was watching those grainy original cast clips on YouTube.

The recent tour was actually very similar to the original, which actually made it more frustrating--it was essentially the original production 'tricked-out' and given a shiny, sparkly American Idol-like aesthetic that got monotonous and uninteresting after about half an hour. Even more frustrating was bits of highly effective original blocking and movement were replaced by far less effective variations for the sake of being different, it appeared.

For example, the way "And I Am Telling You..." is staged is nearly identical as in the original with the same concept of the audience having a point of view as if looking through behind their dressing room mirrors. It had the same blocking. Even that cinematic, zoom lens effect of the entire dressing room set suddenly moving backwards with Effie holding her arm out was in the recent revival, except, they had Effie stand center stage as the set behind her moved backwards and disappeared. Then Effie, alone on stage, 'runs' backwards while holding her arms out as the Dreams come in and take over.

Why they did not have her sitting on the dressing room unit, and have her disappear along with it as in the original, creating that awesome zoom lens effect, I'll never know as it was 100 times less effective.

Sh*t like that, although seemingly minor, are anything but, and are the reason why I've lost faith in these recent "reimagined" versions and prefer something more time-tested and proven rather than ambitious and misguided.

I've already went on and on about my dream revival being a LCT production of FOLLIES with the same team who have done SOUTH PACIFIC and THE KING AND I (difference being that Christopher Wheeldon could be co-director and choreographer). After much thinking about it, James Goldman's book (no matter what version it is) is completely flawed in every sense of the word. I love what surrounds it (Prince, Bennett and the rest of the talented cast and crew, used so much imaginative creativity for that legendary 1971 production) but I kind of feel cheated on the four main characters, who to me, feel like middle-aged angst tools who don't feel like human beings.

Maybe with a very smart book writer, we can finally have a book that can be up there with Sondheim's genius score.

In looking back at my (fairly recently edited) post on this thread about how I would do a production of Tanz der Vampire that was closer to the German original (see page 4), I see a lot of things I've changed my mind about. My ideas with regard to style and tone, score, length, and casting stars who won't mess with the material still largely hold up, but I have a different outlook on the design, and further, the production's size and scale. Overall, it would be (compared to the European original and even DOTV) a small, minimalist production.

First, the venue. Along the lines of Rocky Horror starting off at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, I'd be thinking a similarly intimate space, but not an actual theater -- I'm thinking Goth-themed night club. That audience clearly has a special affinity for the piece, considering how many young Goths are part of the show's fan community already, and I also think the audience participation and natural levity that one finds in a club venue would augment the vitality and thrill of the piece.

The design would be stripped down. Costumes would suggest some of the Hammer Horror aspect in the peasants, but vampires would be fairly uniformly sexy and leather-clad (though not without dark or boring sides), operating on the assumption that the undead life must have some sort of allure to pull in its victims, because what they say (in the German lyrics at least) makes it sound damn depressing. The lighting would be largely stark, realistic, sheer black-and-white Nosferatu, in the village scenes, giving way to wild color when we spend most of our time in the Gothic playground of Krolock's castle in Act Two. And the set I envision as largely resembling the 10th anniversary concert in Vienna in 2007 -- a unit set with the "orchestra" (more on that in a second) onstage, and some props that get moved on and off.

Orchestra: smaller, and strongly emphasizing the rock elements of the score. 8 musicians, your basic rock rhythm section with an acoustic instrument or two. (Don't forget you can fill in a lot of the more symphonic elements with keyboards and programming if they need to be there -- much of DOTV was on a click track anyway, comparing the soundboard that's circulated for a few years with other recordings of the show in Europe.) I would also go with a smaller cast: the only four leads who don't double other roles would be Krolock, Sarah, Alfred, and the Professor. The secondary leads (Chagal, Magda, Rebecca, Herbert, Koukol) would double as ensemble, with a few extra performers to boost the ensemble vocals. No more than 20 people onstage. (I've always personally felt that the Tanz casts on average seem larger than is necessary for the choreography, which would work better with a smaller group.)

Would love to see a N2N revival. Some names I've seen thrown around

Dan - Leslie Odom Jr (Composed and reflective, and goodness I can just hear him slaying that score)
Natalie - Laura Dreyfuss (Perfection)
Gabe - Jordan Fisher (I feel like he'd smarten up a bit in a more dramatic role, and he's got the talent)

Can't decide on a Diana, there are a lot of broadway heavyweights I'd love to see take on the role. A new design, concept, blocking, everything would be lovely... perhaps a more rough and shattered aesthetic? I saw a production that worked a shattered glass motif throughout their design. Or go the other way and have everything a little too shiny and fake.
