SPIRIT OF THE GAME: THE ULTIMATE MUSICAL to Premiere Off-Broadway at Asylum NYC
Directed by Liz Piccoli, the show features book, music, and lyrics by Philip Vlahakis.
Spirit of the Game: The Ultimate Musical, an original dramedy directed and choreographed by Liz Piccoli, with musical direction by Julian Blackmore, will have its Off-Broadway premiere this spring. The production runs from May 14 to May 17, 2026 at Asylum NYC, 123 East 24th Street.
A winning selection at the 2025 Florida Festival of New Musicals, this wholly original show follows disgraced high school football star, Johnny Diskakis, who gets a shot at redemption when he joins the Greek National Mixed Ultimate Frisbee Team.
With book, music, and lyrics by former world champion ultimate frisbee player, Philip Vlahakis, the show explores how the sport's emphasis on self-regulation and sportsmanship has resonance beyond the sporting world. Johnny and his dad, Yiorgos, find themselves relegated from the U.S. to their ancestral home on the island of Crete. There, Johnny meets local athletic phenom and team captain, Thina, who woos Johnny on to the Greek National Mixed squad with immediate results. As he battles past demons, mixed signals from Thina, and Yiorgos' disapproval, Johnny may ultimately discover what winning is all about.
