SONGS Of TRUTH - The Awakening! at HIPPODROME

“SONGS of TRUTH -The Awakening” is a staged concert song cycle from TRUTH - a new musical in development, inspired by the true life story and spiritual mission of SOJOURNER TRUTH. Presented for one night only at the historic Hippodrome Theater on Saturday, June 20th at 7pm.

TRUTH was written by Keni B Fine, Off-Broadway lyricist, composer, librettist, Broadway and Off-Broadway producer and co-producer, based in Astoria, Queens and Richmond, VA.

“SONGS of TRUTH: The Awakening” is directed by New York City-based director, choreographer and theater artist Tanya Birl-Torres, who is currently Artist in Residence at New York’s The Shed.

Desirée Roots will headline as Sojourner Truth, with a cast including Carla Jackson, Milani Hopkins, Dale Heiskill, Stacie Brown, Jana Nichole Prentiss, Te-Loriah Whitfield, and Dorothy Dee-D Miller. Music directed by Ian Krauss, the Band is comprised of Richmond standouts Weldon Hill, Mike Hawkins, James “Saxmo” Gates, Ken Kellner and Isaac Edgerton.

SONGS of TRUTH is presented by producers Craig Martin, Keni B Fine, and Shockoe Records.

The TRUTH creative team also joins the Institute for Contemporary Art at the Black History Museum and Culture Center of Virginia, on Juneteenth, for “Songs of Truth: A Black Music Month Celebration.” The program will feature a discussion on the powerful connection between history and music through the life and legacy of Sojourner Truth, and the meaning and journey of creating a musical based on that legacy. Featuring musical interludes by Desirée Roots and the Black Awakening Choir of Richmond.
