Dr. Smile: A New Musical, running May 15–30 at Zeiders American Dream Theater in Virginia Beach, tells the true story of Dr. Valli Meeks, a Black female dentist who founded a dental clinic in 1989 dedicated to treating patients living with HIV/AIDS at a time when many providers refused care. Written by local playwright Clyde Santana, the production explores the intersection of healthcare, fear, and compassion during the early years of the AIDS epidemic, tracing both the professional and personal challenges Dr. Meeks faced. The show features newly developed orchestrations created through a collaboration between composer Andre Magalhaes and songwriter Kira Sarai Helper, reflecting the production's commitment to regional artistic talent.
