West Director: Robert John Connor Production Manager: Salondia Aveni Stage Manager: Lisa Watson Breakdown Centering on four generations of African American women,"Jar the Floor" explores the legacy of guilt and hostility that is passed from even the most loving mother to a daughter, and at the same time it shows that particular intimacy to be innately funny and wonderful."Jar the Floor" breaks through many cliches of mother-daughter relations to embrace a household that is full of life. Conflict is inevitable because each of the women has, in her distinctive way, an out-sized personality. MaDear is a crotchety great-grandmother whose 90th-birthday celebration is the focus of the play. Seeking MaDear: 90(Black) Mother of Lola, grandmother of Maydee and great-grandmother of Vennie. Her 90th-birthday celebration is the focus of the play. Lola: Mid 60's(Black) Daughter of MaDear, Mother of MayDee and grandmother of Vennie is a woman who does everything in excess but not necessarily in good taste or with tact. MayDee: Mid 40's(Black) Mother of Vennie, daughter of Lola and granddaughter of MaDear is a professor of African American studies at an unnamed Illinois university, and is waiting to find out if she has tenure. Vennie: Late 20's(Black)Granddaughter of Lola, daughter of MayDee and Great-granddaughter of MaDear, Vennie is a sexually ambitious dreamer who aspires to be a singer. Raisa: 30's(White) A"friend" who arrives with Vennie to the 90th birthday celebration. She recently and visibly has had her breast removed due to breast cancer.
