SEEKING STRONG ACTORS. All characters have strong inner cores.

MRS. MANNINGHAM: 30-40’s. She was good-looking, almost a beauty – but now she has a haggard, wan, frightened air, though at times her youthful gaiety comes through. Strong character who reaches inside herself to break free and triumph.

MR. MANNINGHAM: 40-50’s. Good-looking. Perhaps a little too well dressed. His manner is suave, authoritative, cruel, with a touch of mystery and bitterness. A charming, yet menacing man.

INSPECTOR ROUGH: middle-aged. (Played by Leo G. Carroll on Broadway). Graying, brusque, friendly, overbearing. He has a low, warm chuckle and completely dominates the scene from the beginning.

ELIZABETH: Middle-aged. an amiable, devoted, housekeeper woman. Middle-age.

NANCY: a pretty, cheeky maid in her young 20’s, who goes after what she wants. Kissing scene.

EXTRAS: one or two English Bobbies (police). No lines. Brief.

Set in a fog-bound London in 1880, it tells the tale of the cruel and cold-hearted Jack Manningham who is pushing his wife Bella to the verge of insanity. And just how that is linked to the strange noises upstairs and the dimming gaslights in their Victorian London house is the mystery that unfolds with scintillating style…
