'But They're A Nutcracker' is an independent Queer Christmas Musical Comedy. While it is written as a screenplay, we'll be performing a live reading of the material as part of the development.
The staged reading will take place Saturday December 12th at 7:00pm at Project For Living Artists (Woodside, Queens) with the potential of an additional performance on Friday December 11th.
There will be 3 rehearsals in November and early December, including one in-person music rehearsal, one virtual read through, and one in-person run through.
About the piece:
'But They're A Nutcracker' follows 30-something bisexual Garland December as she inherits her Grandma's Cookie Shop. Non-binary love interest Hazel is murdered and their soul gets trapped in the body of a Nutcracker. Plus, the cookie recipe is missing! Together they need to solve the murder, find the recipe, and learn the True Meaning Of Christmas while falling in love. It's silly, funny, and very gay.
The roles we're looking for:
1. ENDORA: Transfemme/Trans Woman. Gen Z (18-29), Garland December's best friend and employee at the Cookie Shop, also a witch. Dryly funny. Has one solo number (alto range, but can be adjusted to fit performer's voice).
2. JUDY/GRANDMA: Female, 40-60. Primarily playing Judy, Garland's mother, but also doubling as Grandma. Judy is passive aggressive, resents her late mother and her daughter, but loves Christmas. Performs two songs as Judy (alto/mezzo range, but can be adjusted to fit performer's voice).
3. SANTA/DAD: Male, 40-60. Primarily playing Santa, but also doubling as Garland's Dad. Santa has big Gen X Divorced Dad energy. Really into Ska, and our main antagonist. Performs one solo number as Santa (it's a ska song).
