Steve Reich - Three Movements
Mason Bates - Violin Concerto
Dvorak - Symphony No.9 in E Minor
We celebrate Steve Reich’s 80th birthday with his minimalist Three Movements. A world of delicate rhythmic and harmonic variations, Reich explains this isn’t meaningless mechanical music but sound palettes inspired ‘by the changing light as clouds move slowly across the sky’.
It was the ancient creatures of prehistoric times that inspired the eclectic soundscapes of contemporary American composer Mason Bates. His Violin Concerto explores primitive themes as they transform into magnificent, soaring melodies. Continuing the tradition of our Bold Worlds series - to present new concertos by the soloists for whom they were composed - the stunning violinist Anne Akiko Meyers performs this adventurous new work.
Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, ‘From the New World’ completes tonight’s exploration of American music. Conducted by the American maestro, Fawzi Haimor, he will lead us through this celebration of new frontiers with his focused, precise and elegant style.
