Writer Federico García Lorca is now considered one of Spain’s greatest icons, but in 1936, at the start of the Spanish Civil War, he found himself in front of a firing squad at Ainadamar (“fountain of tears” in Arabic). Lorca’s muse Margarita Xirgu conjures up his dramatic life and tragic death in this powerful opera by Grammy Award-winning composer Osvaldo Golijov. Singers from the award-winning recording – Kelley O’Connor, Jessica Rivera and Jesus Montoya – along with Leanne Keneally and James Clayton star in the Festival’s semi-staged production, conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya and directed by Sara Brodie.
