Skylight Theatre Company Locks In 2017 Season

Skylight Theatre Company, recognized for their unwavering commitment to developing new works, has confirmed a 2017 lineup of four plays, new to Los Angeles. Works include plays from Luis Alfaro, Inda Craig-Galvan, Louisa Hill, and Queerwise.

Kicking off the new season is the World Premiere of Shades of Disclosure by Queerwise, directed by Michal Kearns. Spanning from the 1988 display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in Washington DC to the worldwide women's marches, this show celebrates the triumphant lives of real people whose personal stories have been forgotten or silenced. A sixteen-year old who, after bravely announcing her queerness, finds herself at a precarious turning point in American politics, finds mentors who tell it like it was, is, and how they hope it can be posing a host of social justice issues that we all must face: Homophobia, Racism, Immigration Rights, Healthcare, and the Rights of Transpersons. Runs Saturdays 8pm, and Sundays 3pm, January 28. - February 25.

The Lord of the Underworld's Home for Unwed Mothers by Louisa Hill, directed by Tony Abatemarco is next up beginning April 8th. Winner of the Kennedy Centers' Mark Twain Award for Comic Playwriting, Louisa Hills' reimagining of the Persephone myth explores the politics of motherhood through a landscape of Catholicism, horticulture, and death metal. Runs Fridays at 8:30pm, Saturdays 8:00pm and Sundays 7pm, April 8 - May 14.

Black Super Hero Magic Mama by Inda Craig-Galvan, directed by Deena Selenow will open August 12th. A single black mother is unable to cope with the shooting death of her 14-year-old son at the hands of a white police officer. She must decide if she'll stay in her comic book fantasy world as a super hero crime fighter, where sons don't die, or return to the real world and mourn her loss. Runs Fridays at 8:30pm, Saturdays 8:00pm and Sundays 7pm, August 12 - September 3.

Our Father's House by Luis Alfaro. directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera will close out the season in November. It will be co-Produced with Playwright's Arena. Celebrated Los Angeles playwright, Luis Alfaro examines the traits of violence in religion in his new play, "Our Father's House. Loosely inspired by Lorca's classic tale The House of Bernarda Alba. This new theatre work combines physical work, choral voices, and storytelling on a bare stage. Runs Fridays at 8:30pm, Saturdays 8pm, Sundays 3pm, November 4 - December 3.

Gary Grossman (Producing Artistic Director) is the recipient of Stage Raw's 2016 "Career Achievement Award," and he is the Producing Artistic Director for Skylight Theatre Company. He started his career in New York owning two theaters and a theatrical lighting company by the age of 23. Gary worked at The Public Theatre, Café La Mama, and Sheraton Square Playhouse before traveling west in the 70's to join up with the emerging theatre moment in Los Angeles. He has produced over 300 stage plays, including more than 50 world premieres. Among his celebrated productions are the World Premieres of Church & State (deputing Off-Broadway on March 3rd),Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea (Steinberg/National Theatre Critics Citation), El Grande CIRCUS de Coca-Cola , Wrong Man (3 Ovation Awards), Pray To Ball (1 Ovation Award), Years to the Day, Hermetically Sealed, Bullrusher, Sexsting, Mad Women (LA Weekly Award), Romeo and Juliet directed by Milton Katselas (3 LADCC Awards), Dylan (3 LADCC Awards), Influence, Open House, Dream Man, Lone Star, Balm in Gilead, Visions and Lovers, Rabbit Hole, Beautified and La Ronde de Lunch.

Skylight Theatre Company discovers, develops and produces new, exhilarating works that expand mainstream theatre while nurturing and educating the people who create them. A recipient of the prestigious Steinberg National Theatre Critics Citation (Dontrell, Who Kissed The Sea - Nathan Alan Davis), Skylight's resident PlayLAb writers have been recognized with productions nationwide, a national2014 USA Ford Fellowship in Theater and Performance (Sigrid Gilmer), and locally as a winner in the 2015 Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize (Louisa Hill). Skylight won 4 Ovation Awards in 2014 for The Wrong Man and Pray To Ball (the most of any intimate theatre in LA). LA Weekly included the Skylight's productions of Years To The Day, Open House and Sexsting on their Top Ten list of plays for 2013. Skylight's first year as a company dedicated to developing new plays was 2011; their production ofHermetically Sealed made the LA Times annual list of Top Ten Plays, and Mad Women moved from Los Angeles to La MaMa in New York.
