McCarter Theatre Center continues its 2016 Signature Series with two special events from the Salzburg Marionette Theatre on February 27th and 28th, namely its renowned tellings of Little Red Riding Hood/Peter and the Wolf, and Alice in Wonderland. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre is one of the last remaining full-time professional marionette theatres in Europe. Since its inception in 1913, it has attracted millions of spectators and undertaken hundreds of tours on all continents.The art of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre is the tradition of creating lifelike figures on the stage, and the perfect construction of the figures and countless technical inventions and achievements have made the Salzburg Marionette Theatre a leading representative of the art. The fine expressive detail in the sculptured heads, the meticulous tailoring of the costumes and the impeccable construction of the stage-sets - all these qualities combine to produce the outstanding performances of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre.

McCarter's Signature Series is curated by Special Programming Director William W. Lockwood, who remains the driving force behind McCarter Theatre Center's reputation as one of the premiere arts presenters in the country.

Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, one of the best-known stories ever written, comes to life with a production featuring the March Hare, the Mock Turtle, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, and, of course, the Queen and King of Hearts, all imaginatively brought to life through a creative set design and newly recorded score, taken from period dance music. An unforgettable experience for young and old admirers of this timeless story, now celebrating its 150th anniversary (published in winter of 1865).


SALZBURG MARIONETTES - LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD/PETER AND THE WOLF

First, the charming story of one very dramatic day in the life of young Peter set to Sergei Prokofiev's Op. 67 symphony. Each character is assigned its own musical instrument and theme as the music, narration and extraordinary, handcrafted marionettes bring this classic children's tale to life. Then, Little Red takes her turn with the wolf, showing us more of the consequences that come with straying from the path.
