Paper Mill To Be Honored at Millburn-Short Hills Gala 2/4

The Millburn-Short Hills Chamber of Commerce (Karol McNulty-Executive Director, Shayne Austin Miller-President) will host a special gala titled 'Come Together' on Saturday, February 4th, 6:00 pm, at Hilton-Short Hills. The evening will feature dinner, dancing, auctions and awards to honor not-for-profit organizations with offices or headquarters in Millburn and Short Hills. Twelve organizations were chosen by the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors to receive the "Major Not-For-Profit Serving our Community and Beyond Award". These organizations include: American Red Cross – MSH Chapter; Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation; Cora Hartshorn Arboretum; Down The Block, Inc.; Greenwood Gardens; Jake's Ride for Dystonia Research; Millburn Township Beautification League; New Eyes for the Needy; Opportunity Project, Inc.; Paper Mill Playhouse; The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey – Millburn Short Hills and United Way of Millburn-Short Hills.

Gala attendees can choose one charity among these not-for-profit organizations to support and the Millburn-Short Hills Chamber of Commerce will donate 30% of the ticket price to that organization. American Red Cross has been the nation's premier emergency response organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters.

Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation – www.christopherreeve.org
The Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy. The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation's roots stretch back to 1982 when the American Paralysis Association was formed by a group of people that refused to accept the prevailing notion that the spinal cord, once injured, could not be repaired.

Mr. Reeve sought out the organization following his injury in 1995. As he said, "I have always been a crusader for causes I believe in. This time, the cause found me. He shared the American Paralysis Association's belief in a cure and lent his name, passion and drive to the organization which ultimately became known as the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

Cora Hartshorn Arboretum - www.hartshornarboretum.org
Cora Hartshorn Arboretum is an historic woodlands garden and educational institution. They promote an understanding of the relationship between people and the environment through programs that integrate arts, sciences and the humanities. The Arboretum conducts four major activities: education, outreach, research, and zoological/horticultural display. The Arboretum provides services to local schools, community institutions and citizens of all ages.

Down the Block is the only organization that can step in to pay a bill for a MSH Township resident experiencing unforeseen financial need. Money collected in Millburn Township is used to help neighbors – quietly and confidentially - right here in Millburn-Short Hills. Donations help to pay for desperately needed goods and services.

Greenwood Gardens – www.greenwoodgardens.org
Greenwood Gardens became a not-for-profit in 2003 and has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places as nationally significant for its beauty, history and design. Its 28 acres include formal gardens, open meadows, woodlands, and pasture. Today, Greenwood Gardens is charting a new future with an ambitious plan to revitalize the gardens, preserve them for future generations, and become a vibrant cultural center for the New York Metropolitan region.

Jake's Ride for Dystonia Research – www.jakesride.org
Jake's Ride is a community fundraiser with several bike riding courses including a one-mile, five-mile, 10-mile and 20-mile route traveling through Millburn/Short Hills, as well as a one-mile walking course that supports The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation. The foundation was established in 1995 to find better treatments and cures for the movement disorders dystonia and Parkinson's disease and to provide medical and patient information. Scientists often find it difficult to get funding in the earliest stages of their research. The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation provides 'seed money' to help explore the most promising hypotheses. These annual grant awards, help to leverage new ideas and advances in the fields.

Millburn Township Beautification League
The league works in tandem with the local government and other organizations, such as the Shade Tree Advisory Board, Downtown Millburn Development Alliance, local garden clubs and other community groups that have an interest in developing and maintaining beautification projects throughout the township.

Since their founding in 1932, New Eyes for the Needy has improved the eyesight of more than 7,000,000 people in the U.S. and around the world. Each new pair of glasses purchased by New Eyes helps an American child succeed in school, an adult secure a job or a senior citizen read medicine labels. Their recycled glasses bring clearer vision to scores of people living in poverty overseas.

The Opportunity Project Clubhouse is a unique program created by and for adults with brain injuries who are seeking the "next step" in their journey to recovery. The organization provides an environment of support, challenge and choices that create independence and productivity for its members. The ultimate goal is full integration back into family, work and community.

The mission of the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey is, simply, to "unsell" drugs to the people of New Jersey - especially our young people. The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey (PDFNJ) was formed in 1992 as a state anti-drug alliance to localize, strengthen, and deepen drug-prevention media efforts. Founded in 1992, Drugs Don't Work in NJ! merged with the Partnership for A Drug Free New Jersey in 1999. As of April, 2006, more than 2,000 New Jersey companies have already joined this initiative and are experiencing the benefits of a drug-free workplace.

Everyday, someone in Millburn or Short Hills needs help, whether a friend, neighbor, family member, or an employee. The needs are real. Homebound residents need meals delivered. Domestic abuse victims need shelter, locks changed, and counseling. Children with cancer and blood disorders need healthcare services and transportation to medical facilities. These needs are met through contributions to the United Way of Millburn-Short Hills. In addition, the United Way makes funds available to other local organizations.
