Mime Bill Bowers to Perform Solo Show at Cape May Stage, 6/17
New York mime Bill Bowers takes audiences on a funny and poignant journey through mime, music and monologues. On Monday June 17, Bowers will bring his acclaimed solo show, "Beyond Words," with spoken and silent stories of small town America, to Cape May Stage's Robert Shackleton Playhouse.
One of the most famous mimes in America today, Bowers' eloquent movement evokes the deepest truths of the human condition. Often compared to Chaplin and Keaton, he is a student of world-renowned mime Marcel Marceau. Bowers has performed and conducted workshops throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. His original shows have been produced Off-Broadway. The New York Timeshas said "To see Bill Bowers is to see the technical elements of a style that bring Marcel Marceau readily to mind. Mime can be wonderful...the air between him and us was his palette."
Beyond Words is comprised of a series of stories, some from Bower's own life and some from experiences that others have shared with him. The play examines what boys learn on their way to becoming men. The storytelling blends monologue, mime and music, and runs the gamut from hilarious to heartbreaking.
Included in the evening is a Chaplinesque pantomime about a Wild West adventure, an adaptation of a story from Sherwood Anderson's novel Wineburg, Ohio, and a piece inspired by hate crimes against LGBTQ youth; in particular, the murder of Matthew Shepard.
Beyond Words will run from Monday, June 17 at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse located at 405 Lafayette Street in downtown Cape May at8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call (609) 770-8311 for reservations and information or visit the theatre's website, www.capemaystage.org.
