BWW Reviews: OLIVER! at Paper Mill is Picture Perfect for the Holidays

By:

Charles Dickens story, Oliver Twist, appeals to a person's deep desire for social justice. And now, Oliver, a superb musical production of this classic tale is showing at Paper Mill Playhouse through December 29th is just in time for the holiday season.

Directed by Paper Mill's Producing Artistic Director, Mark S. Hoebee with lively choreography by JoAnn M. Hunter, the staging is picture-perfect. Oliver is an extraordinary choice for family entertainment.

The show opens with an evening scene in the Workhouse where Oliver and the Workhouse Boys perform Food, Glorious Food; the first of many captivating numbers. Tyler Morgan plays Oliver and he is charming in the role of the orphan who is shuttled around by selfish adults who care nothing for his welfare. In his moving solo, Where is Love, Oliver expresses his yearning for a life he has only dreamed of.

Oliver is full of colorful characters; Mr. Bumble played by John Treacy Egan; Widow Corney played by Jessica Sheridan; The Artful Dodger played by Ethan Haberfield; Fagin played by David Garrison; Bill Sykes played by Jose Llana. The mix of dark comedy and drama is complimented by musical numbers including the spirited Pick a Pocket or Two by Fagin and Fagin's Gang and the beautiful solo, As Long As He Needs Me performed by Betsey Morgan who plays the sympathetic role of Nancy.

And there are the thrilling musical theater moments when the full company comes together in elaborate displays to present well known songs like Consider Yourself, or Who Will Buy?

Even if you have seen Oliver before, you will be more than delighted with Paper Mill's production. This musical theater treasure has fresh, exciting elements and touching moments that give the classic full life on the Millburn stage.

Oliver will be performed at Paper Mill Playhouse eight times a week, Wednesday through Sunday. Tickets may be purchased by calling (973) 376-4343, at the Papermill Playhouse Box Office or online at www.papermill.org.
