Review: JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH at The Growing Stage is Fantastic

By:

The Growing Stage, The Children's Theatre of New Jersey is currently presenting the musical version of JAMES ANDTHE GIANT PEACH through April 3rd. Full of adventure and fantasy, the show is adapted from the popular children's novel written by British author, Ronald Dahl. With a score by the team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul with the book by Timothy Allen McDonald, this fantastic production shines bright on the Netcong stage.

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH tells the story of young James, a child who has lost his parents and must go to live with his selfish, conniving aunts. When he is sent to chop down their old fruit tree, James discovers a magic potion that results in an enormous peach. Soon, James finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach among human-sized insects with larger-than-life personalities. When the peach falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, it becomes a seaworthy vessel. As the group faces a journey with dangerous challenges, James shows remarkable wit and bravery. More than a children's story, it is a tale of courage and finding family.

The remarkable cast of JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH features Equity Artists, Jeremy Feight as Earthworm/BobbyCop/Bitsy Botana; Izzy Figueroa as Centipede/Buzz/Matron Nurse; Cara Ganski as Ladybug/Mrs. Trotter/Reporter; Lori B. Lawrence as Sponge; Casey Low as Spider/Reporter; Robert Mintz as Grasshopper/Mr. Trotter/Madame Guild President and Martha Harvey as Spiker. Community Artists include Robert Allan as Ladahlord and Danielle Becht as James. This group of talented individuals brings the show's whimsical elements and heartfelt moments to life.

Clever and engaging musical numbers include the opening song, "Right Before Your Eyes" by the full company, "Floatin' Along" by Grasshopper, Insects & James, the snappy duet, "I Got You" by Spiker & Sponge, and the final piece, "Welcome Home" by James and the Insects.

The Growing Stage production of JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH enjoys wonderful direction by the theatre's Founder and Executive Director, Stephen L. Frederick, lively choreography by Jillian Petrie and great musical direction by Stephen Fox. Perry Arthur Kroeger has done a terrific job with the scenic design, mask design and painting. Becky Nitka is the Stage Manager. The Creative Team has succeeded in presenting an exciting and entertaining production for youngsters and many more to enjoy.
