Capitol Center Presents IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: LIVE FROM...RADIO THEATRE

By: Nov. 29, 2011

It's a Wonderful Life Live from the WVL Radio Theatre will be performed at Concord's Capitol Center for the Arts on Tuesday, December 20 at 7:00pm just in time to kick off the holiday season with your friends and family. Tickets start at just $20 for this family-friendly holiday performance.

Almost everyone knows the story of the classic holiday favorite IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. It's the uplifting and bittersweet tale of George Bailey's close call with death on Christmas Eve, of how important and special he is to all those around him - and what this world would have missed had he not been born. It's a story about the people of Bedford Falls, about neighbors, friends and family, and about the difference one person makes in so many others' lives.

Nominated for five Academy Awards, Frank Capra's beloved film is an undisputed holiday treasure, ranked #11 in the American Film Institute's list of the 100 best American films ever made - and also their #1 most inspirational American film of all time.

The classic story of George Bailey's conflict between wanting to escape his hometown and wanting to stick it out and do right by his family shines in this unique adaptation. Created by W.V.R. Repoley, the ON AIR sign lights up and you're in the studios of WVL Radio at Christmas time, 1946. More than 30 characters and numerous locations of the classic movie spring to life, in a beautifully detailed experience that recalls a mainstay of our cultural experience in years past: the live radio drama. While it's become almost a virtually extinct formula (a small group of talented actors + live sound effects + the listener's vivid imagination,) this re-imagined production by NC Stage Company and Immediate Theatre Project easily shows that it's an art worth preserving. This creative retelling of the uplifting story of George Bailey, Clarence Oddbody, and the many citizens of Bedford Falls becomes a perfect antidote to today's commercialized, stress-fueled holiday season.

"This pared-down stage version reminds us of everything we love about the movie," a reviewer wrote in the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer. "The radio theater approach fits the period, and, far from distracting us, refreshes dialogue most viewers already know by heart. Portrayals are clear, earnest and deeply felt."

Since 2006, North Carolina Stage Company and Immediate Theatre Project have produced a delightful radio play version of It's a Wonderful Life, which has been an incredible hit, earning raves from critics and audiences.

Tickets for It's A Wonderful Life: Live from the WVL Radio Theatre are $35 Gold Circle, $29 Orchestra/Mezzanine, and $20 Balcony, and are available now by calling 603-225-1111, online at www.ccanh.com, at the box office on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
