Operadagen Rotterdam Presents First Music Theatre Awards

Operadagen Rotterdam presents its very first music theatre awards to young makers and groups that deliver a major contribution to contemporary music theatre as part of the brand-new and dazzling GALA! on Saturday 20 May. The ground-breaking string quartet Ragazze Quartet (NL), star soprano Nora Fischer (NL), producer Ana Ablamonova (OPEROMANIJA, Lithuania), director Jorinde Keesmaat (NL), and the organisation behind the Umculo Cape Festival (South Africa) will share the spotlights.

Operadagen Rotterdam is always on the lookout for state-of-the-art and/or innovative productions. Every year the festival stages numerous works by talented and upcoming makers who are provided with the opportunity to develop and grow in the fields of opera and music theatre. Makers from around the world will congregate at the festive GALA! on Saturday when all eyes will be on a line-up of extraordinary artists. This year's jury for the awards consisted of theatre expert/author Willem Bruls, Bert Palinckx (artistic director November Music), Maarten van Boven (general/artistic director Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ), and Guy Coolen (artistic director Operadagen Rotterdam and Music Theatre Transparant).

Prominently presented at GALA! is Sága, a ballad opera about the search for a new home by the Belgian band Dez Mona featuring B.O.X. (Baroque Orchestration X). After Operadagen Rotterdam co-produced this performance in 2012 it toured various (international) festivals (including one in New York) in subsequent years. Soprano Nora Fischer and Ragazze Quartet will be dazzling the audience on 20 May with a joint performance. Music theatre collective CLUB GEWALT acts as MC during the evening's programme.
