What would you rather do than visit the theatre? Not much, you'd probably say. But here's the answer: visit the theatre and get a backstage tour for a bargain price. This is exactly what you can do during the National Theatre Weekend during the weekend of January 20, 21 and 22. More than 60 theatres across the Netherlands will open their doors for shows with ticket prices of maximum €10.

The National Theatre Weekend is an initiative of the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund and the National Theatre Fund and will be organised for the second time in less than two weeks. Last year's edition was a huge success, and the wishes of one of the initiators Albert Verlinde (National Theatre Fund, Stage Entertainment) came true: "It's special to see that not only regular theatregoers came to their theatres but that people who almost never visit the theatre came to have a look at a performance, workshop or other activity. [...] I secretly hope that this first edition will set up a new tradition and that we can organise a new National Theatre Weekend next year" he stated after last year's edition. And not only will the weekend take place again, it will be almost twice as large as last year. Last year's edition had 35 participating theatres and more than 100.000 visitors, while during this year's National Theatre Weekend more than 60 theatres will organise (special) performances, workshops, backstage tours and other activities.

With so many theatres organising shows, everyone can find something they like. There will be dance workshops, plays, concerts, musical theatre, family shows, classical music, local theatre groups and so on. All activities take place on Friday, Saturday or Sunday the 20th, 21st or 22nd of January. All tours through the theatres take place on Saturday between 12pm and 5pm.
